LEED v3 GA & BD+C Exam Prep Seminars:
Two 8 Hour Workshops on June 24 & 25 in
Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Harrisburg

Day 1 (06/24/2010 from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm) -
LEED Green Associate Seminar

The Green Associate (GA) Exam Prep Seminar will provide an overview of all the content covered on the GA exam.

All candidates who wish to become a LEED Accredited Professional (AP) need to start by first becoming a Green Associate (referred to as Tier 1 accreditation). Topics covered include project registration and certification process, overview of concepts that are covered across all LEED rating systems, intro to the computer-based testing environment, and a road map for how to organize your post-seminar prep.

AIA Credits: 8.0 HSW/4.0 SD LU

NOTE: Unless you have past experience on a LEED project OR are employed in a sustainable eld of work, it is a mandatory requirement that you attend a Green Building Seminar before USGBC will issue you a LEED Green Associate test date.

Day 2 (06/25/2010 from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm)
LEED AP, Building Design + Construction (BD+C)

For those interested in achieving a Tier 2 LEED credential, the LEED BD+C seminar is meant to prepare candidates to become a LEED AP with a specialization in the Building Design and Construction Rating System. The BD+C rating system is the most utilized and is applicable for most new construction or major renovation of a commercial, institutional or high-rise residential project. The seminar will thoroughly prepare candidates for this exam, as it covers the point structure and requirements of every LEED credit.

AIA Credits: 8.0 HSW/4.0 SD LU

NOTE: In order to be eligible to sit for a LEED AP+ Exam, you must have experience on a LEED project within the last 3 years. Call 1-800-355-1751 if you have any further questions on this or any of the other new requirements.

Which seminar should you take?

Individuals who have no LEED credential but wish to eventually become a LEED AP that specializes in New Construction & Major Renovations are encouraged to sign up for the GA seminar as well as the BD+C seminar.
Candidates who are not sure what their LEED AP specialty will be, or who wish to prepare only for the GA exam can sign up for the GA one-day seminar.

Legislative Update

Professional Services Tax
The Pennsylvania Coalition Opposed to an Expanded Sales Tax, formerly PennCOST, continues to advocate against the expansion of the sales tax. AIA Pennsylvania is an active member of the coalition, and is strongly opposed to the expansion of sales tax to architectural services.

Senate Democrats held a May 3 press conference to voice their opposition to the tax increase.  Senate Republicans, who were the first to voice publicly their opposition, are planning a joint hearing for June 8 with the Senate Policy Committee and Finance Committee to show their opposition. In addition, House Democrats have joined the cause, and they too are planning press conferences to announce opposition to the sales tax expansion in the next several weeks. AIA Pennsylvania believes that it is extremely important for us to stay engaged as this issue will continue into the budget for 2011-2012.

Uniform Construction Code (UCC)
Sprinkler Issue and the Pennsylvania Builders Association
On March 1, the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania denied the request for an injunction by the Pennsylvania Builders Association (PBA) to halt the implementation of the adopted 2009 International Building Codes.

The main objective argued by PBA was to stop the implementation of the sprinkler requirement in the 2009 International Residential Code.
The PBA has filed a motion asking the court to reconsider the injunction denial. The constitutional case against the Department of Labor and Industry is scheduled for June.

Revisions to the State Architect Licensure Act
The Architects licensing legislation, which would update the Architects Act, is now in the next stage of review and in the hands of the Governor's Office. With the state budget negotiations beginning, the internal review by the Governor's Office is on hold. Meredith Biggica, the new Executive Director of the House Professional Licensure Committee, confirmed that review by the Governor's Office this year is unlikely but to anticipate a review and a hearing next session.  This is one of AIA Pennsylvania's highest priorities.

Interior Design Licensure
The House Professional Licensure Committee will hold an informational public hearing regarding House Bill 1521 on June 24. John Hill, AIA, Chairman of AIA Pennsylvania's Licensure Committee, will provide testimony at this hearing in opposition to the bill.

Local Chapter Visit
Richard DeYoung, AIA, Regional Director to the AIA National Board  and Bob Keaton, AIA Pennsylvania Government Affairs Manager attended a meeting of the Eastern Chapter on May 20 at the Kutztown Tavern.

Bob offered his insights into lobbying with his informative presentation on "What is Government Affairs?" He discussed the basics of lobbying as well as results from the recent May 18 primary election and what this means to AIA Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania Architects PAC (Political Action Committee)
Breakfast of Champions
To further enhance the relationships of members of the General Assembly, a Breakfast of Champions was held May 12 in Pittsburgh for The Honorable Matt Smith. Representative Smith is the lead sponsor of HB 444, the State Funded Green Buildings Bill.  He is one of our leading champions in the General Assembly on Sustainable Design.

The Breakfast was hosted at the offices of Rothschild Doyno Collaborative Architects.

The Pennsylvania Architects PAC continues to advocate on behalf of the architecture profession by holding Breakfast of Champions events with area legislators. The Breakfast of Champion events are designed to provide AIA Pennsylvania members an opportunity to interact and develop relationships with legislators in a small group setting within their community.

Just a reminder to members:
All House seats and half of the Senate seats in the Pennsylvania General Assembly are up for election this year. Several issues this session will impact the profession of Architecture and the Pennsylvania Architects PAC. The PAC helps us develop relationships with the policy makers. That's why it's important that AIA Pennsylvania members contribute to the PAC this year. It's easy to contribute!  Visit our website at www.aiapa.org or email advocacy@aiapa.org for more information.

Mid-Atlantic Precast Association (MAPA) Seeks Best Precast Concrete Projects

Mid-Atlantic Precast Association's (MAPA) Design 2010 Awards are open to all projects from the past five years; an on-line entry form makes it easy to nominate projects by August 21 deadline

CHERRY HILL, N.J. -- Building owners and designers from the Mid-Atlantic region will compete for top honors in the Design 2010 Awards competition sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Precast Association (MAPA).

The program is open to any project featuring precast concrete in its construction that has been completed in the past five years in the qualifying geographic area. Deadline for completing the online nomination form is August 21.

MAPA serves as the regional precast concrete trade organization for Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. Representing 12 major precast concrete manufacturers in the region, MAPA promotes the use of precast concrete in a wide range of projects and building types.

MAPA's Design 10 Awards competition gives area professionals an opportunity to show their creativity with the material and display how they used it to solve
unique challenges. Honorees are selected by a MAPA-designated jury of industry professionals. The awards are presented formally to the winning architects, with the project's owner and the members of the design/build team also earning recognition.

Honorees will be recognized in the MAPA newsletter, on the MAPA website and in other MAPA communications. The winners also will be announced to relevant industry and regional media. MAPA also will endeavor to make a presentation of the award at the winning architects' AIA chapter annual awards program.

· Arena/Stadium    · Bridges     · Commercial      · Governmental
