New Year
2009 ICC Codes Adopted by Pennsylvania

The 2009 Series of ICC Codes were reviewed by the Governor's UCC Review & Advisory Council during the month of April 2009.  On May 1st, the Council recommended to the Department of Labor & Industry that the codes be adopted.  On December 10th, the Pennsylvania Independent Regulatory Review Commission approved the adoption of the 2009 International Construction Codes.

As a result of this approval, the 2009 International Codes will be in effect beginning January 1, 2010.  However, any work covered by a design or construction contract issued prior to Decemeber 31, 2009 will comply with the 2006 International Codes.

There are major changes to all of the ICC Codes that will affect the design of all buildings.  The most controversial changes are in the International Residential Code, including the sprinkler requirement of all townhouses starting January 1, 2010 and of one and two family residences starting in 2011.

AIA Pennsylvania stocks and sells the ICC code books.  Also, ICC offers the Significant Changes to The International Building Code, 2009 Edition and Significant Changes to The International Residential Code, 2009 Edition.

To order copies of the ICC Code books contact Alyssa Wright at 717-236-4055 or

Peter Bohlin, FAIA, Awarded the 2010 AIA Gold Medal

In the December 4th issue of AIArchitect an article was published announcing that one of our members, Peter Bohlin, has been awarded the AIA Gold Medal by the AIA National Board of Directors.

"The American Institute of Architects' Board of Directors awarded the AIA Gold Medal to Peter Bohlin, FAIA, on December 3. The Pennsylvania-based architect and founder of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson is renowned for his versatile, contextual use of materials. The AIA Gold Medal is the highest honor the AIA confers, and acknowledges an individual whose significant body of work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture. Bohlin will be honored at the 2010 AIA National Convention in Miami."
