Breakfast of Champions

The Pennsylvania Architects PAC continues to advocate on behalf of the architecture profession by holding Breakfast of Champions events with area legislators.  The Breakfast of Champions are designed to provide AIA Pennsylvania members an opportunity to interact with legislators in a small group setting in the community.

We recently held two Breakfast of Champions events:
-On October 22, 2009 Representative Mike Gerber (D-Montgomery) joined members for breakfast in Conshohocken.
-On November 19, 2009 Senator John Pippy (R-Allegheny) shared breakfast and conversation with members in Pittsburgh.

Here's what one of the members who participated in these events had to say:

"I really enjoyed meeting Mike Gerber and was impressed with his interest in what we had to say. It is a very good venue to gather like minds and have direct access to a Legislator who seems to care about what we need to make a difference."  Mary Werner DeNadai, FAIA

We encourage all of you to review our current Legislative Agenda and give us your feedback. Your comments will help our Government Affairs Committee develop an agenda for next year.

Please send your comments to Gwen Bower, Government Affairs Manager at gbower@aiapa.org.

Environmental Sustainability -
House Urban Affairs Committee Public Hearing

AIA Pennsylvania was invited to give testimony by the House Urban Affairs Committee at a recent public hearing that focused on sustaining our environment in urban areas.  The hearing was held on November 13, 2009 at the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh and was well attended by legislators.  Elmer B. Burger, II, AIA, presented the testimony on our behalf.  For a copy of the testimony, go to the Legislative Agenda page on our website.

In addition, The AIA recently released a report entitled "Local Leaders in Sustainability Green Building Policy in a Changing Economic Environment."   AIA Pennsylvania referenced this report in the testimony presented to the House Urban Affairs Committee.  To view this document, go to
AIA Advocacy.

DEP Climate Change Recommendations

On July 9, 2008, Governor Rendell signed the Climate Change Act (Act 70 of 2008).  One of the components of this Act is to develop an action plan to detail the measures our Commonwealth could take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  Working with the Climate Change Advisory Committee, the Department of Environmental Protection has prepared this Climate Change Action Report which identifies 52 specific actions that would result in a 95.6 Million Metric Tons of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (MMtCO2e) reduction of Pennsylvania's greenhouse gas emission by 2020.

This plan is currently in draft form and a final copy will be made available to the Governor, members of the Legislature and the public on December 18, 2009.
Unlicensed Practice of Archtiecture

AIA Pennsylvania, as a service to its members, reviews, investigates and files licensure complaints with the State Architects Licensure Board.  If you suspect that a company or individual is practicing architecture unlawfully, there are links on our website to help you.

To determine if the person or company is registered in the Commonwealth, go to the License Verification page on our website. You can search the state's database by facility or individual.

To file a complaint, visit How to File Licensure Complaints on our website.
