High Performance Building Standards Adopted by the Department of General Services In response to the Alternative Energy Investment Act of 2008, for which AIA PA successfully lobbied, the Department of General Services recently announced the adoption of the High Performance Building Standards (see www.gggc.state.pa.us) for use by the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA).
These standards will be applied to the High Performance Building Program which is administered jointly by the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) under the direction of CFA. A link to the program is provided below: http://www.newpa.com/find-and-apply-for-funding/funding-and-program-finder/funding-detail/index.aspx?progId=198

Licensure Board Maximum Civil Penalties Increased
Governor Rendell signed Senate Bill 142 into law on July 17th, 2009. This measure, now known as Act 25 of 2009 authorizes the licensing boards including the State Board of Architectural Licensure and commissions within Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs to increase the maximum civil penalty from $1,000 to $10,000 and imposes costs of investigations on a licensee who has been determined to be in violation of a licensing act or regulation. In addition, the bill makes confidential all records relating to noncriminal investigations undertaken by the Bureau of Enforcement and Investigation and the Prosecution Division of the Department of State on behalf of the licensing boards. Act 25 became effective on September 16th, 2009.

| Unlicensed Practice of Archtiecture
AIA Pennsylvania, as a service to its members, reviews, investigates and files licensure complaints with the State Architects Licensure Board. If you suspect that a company is practicing architecture unlawfully, there are links on our website to help you determine so.
To determine if the person or company is registered as an architect in the state, go to the License Verification page on our website. You can search the state's database by facility or individual.

Are you part of the AIA 2030 Commitment?
The AIA 2030 Commitment is a voluntary program for AIA member firms and other entities in the built environment. It asks firms to make a pledge, develop multi-year action plans, and implement steps that can advance AIA's goal of carbon neutral buildings by the year 2030.
The places where we live, work, and play represent the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in America, as well as around the world. Architects are confronting the fact the buildings are the largest single contributor to production of greenhouse gases and almost half of the total annual production. They are renewing their commitment to the importance of good design -- design that effectively responds to the needs of both natural and human systems.

ARE Timing Requirement Changes
AIA Pennsylvania is pleased to inform you that the PA State Architects Licensure Board recently announced that candidates pursuing their license to become an Architect may take all divisions of the ARE concurrently with their experience requirements through the Intern Development Program (IDP). Therefore, interns no longer need to wait until they complete their IDP before they can begin the written examination process. At the request of our members, AIA PA successfully lobbied for this change throughout the past year. For additional information on examination and licensure requirements, contact the Pennsylvania State Architects Licensure Board:
