Presidential Update
by Patrick J. Endler, AIA
Pat Endler

As Vice President of Architecture at Borton-Lawson, father of two boys, and coach of Little League, I wear several hats throughout my week including my most recent role serving as Statewide President of the American Institute of Architects of Pennsylvania (AIA PA). AIA PA promotes the profession of architecture throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania while striving for the highest quality in the built environment. AIA PA was the first statewide association of the AIA and is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. This role gives me a unique opportunity to promote the profession of architecture and heighten public awareness of architects as problem-solvers and community leaders.

I have been practicing architecture in northeastern PA since 1990 and served as President, Vice President, and Secretary of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the AIA prior to serving on the AIA Pennsylvania Board of Directors. It is an honor to represent member architects, designers of our cities and homes, from all corners of Pennsylvania.

The economy, stimulus plan, and new state legislation have filled my agenda during the first months of my presidency. I had the opportunity to visit Washington, DC with 800 other architects for AIA Grassroots just after the House passed the stimulus bill and while the Senate was debating it. It was a very exciting time. AIA leadership worked hard to refine language that would benefit the built environment. In the next several months I will be working closely with the Board of Directors and Pennsylvania legislators on architects' key government affairs issues such as Sustainable Communities, mandatory continuing education for architects and managing the economy. These issues impact the nearly 3,000 AIA PA members.

One other exciting note for AIA PA is that we are planning to move to a new LEED-certified office space in August of this year. The space is directly across from the Capitol Building in Harrisburg.

Serving in this role gives me an incredible opportunity to affect change. Your concerns are our concerns so please help me facilitate change by letting me know what is important to you. You can contact me at (570) 821-1994 x277 or pendler@borton-lawson.com to discuss any of your issues, and I will address them with our organization.

AIA Pennsylvania is moving even closer to the State Capitol

100th w/tagline
As of this writing, demolition has begun on AIA Pennsylvania's future new office space.

Effective August 1st, we will be relocating to the 12th floor of historic Payne Shoemaker Building (pictured at left), immediately across the street from the Capitol Building in downtown Harrisburg. We have signed a 10-year lease for the entire floor.

Murphy Dittenhafer, under the direction of Frank Dittenhafer, FAIA, the architect of record, has worked with our board, and Elmer Burger, AIA, chair of our Facilities Task Force, to design the fit-out of the space.

Murphy Dittenhafer is donating their services for the project. The goal is for the renovation to be LEED Certified. The office will be customer-friendly for our code book and document sales. It will also have a large meeting room (with the view of the Capitol Building pictured below), for seminars, meetings with policy-makers, and the briefing session for our annual Architects Day on the Hill.
Three years ago, AIA PA sold its building so that we could move to downtown Harrisburg to enhance the effectiveness of our government affairs program. The move into town proved to be a good one as we are "closer to the action" in the Capitol. But, our lease is expiring, and we need more efficient space. During the course of the last three years, the Facilities Task Force has looked at a variety of scenarios for a more permanent location. The Task Force analyzed both purchase and rental alternatives, and concluded that the Payne Shoemaker Building long-term lease was best for the organization. We look forward to settling into our new home. We will bring you progress reports on our renovation project over the course of the summer.
