A British style Old Ale perfect for easing the cold winter months, our Winter Ale offers a malt selection with hints of fig and chocolate, creating the perfect cozy balance of hops and malt.  This year, we added a bit of molasses into the brew to give it a more full-bodied taste.

Vintage Baseball Sneak Peak

On the eve of Thanksgiving a meeting took place between Jim (our OM), Bethany (of SPL Farm) and Brian (of Essex Baseball) to discuss plans for the 2010 Vintage Baseball season.

Nothing is set in stone, but I can say with confidence that we will have many more local games at Spencer Pierce Little Farm next summer and fall.

There are even talks about a special Father's Day Weekend extravaganza!

Chocolate Stout Cake
stout
Try this recipe out:

Cake
2 cups Ipswich Oatmeal Stout
2 cups (4 sticks) unsalted butter
1 1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably Dutch-process)

4 cups all purpose flour
4 cups sugar
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
4 large eggs
1 1/3 cups sour cream

Icing
2 cups whipping cream
1 pound bittersweet (not unsweetened) or semisweet chocolate, chopped

Preparation:
CAKE:
1.  Preheat oven to 350.  Butter 3-8 inch pans.  Bring 2 cups stout and 2 cups butter to simmer in heavy large saucepan over medium heat. Add cocoa powder and whisk until mixture is smooth. Cool slightly
2. Whisk flour, sugar, baking soda, and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt in large bowl to blend. Using electric mixer, beat eggs and sour cream in another large bowl to blend. Add stout-chocolate mixture to egg mixture and beat just to combine. Add flour mixture and beat briefly on slow speed. Using rubber spatula, fold batter until completely combined.
3. Divide evenly into 3 pans.  Bake about 35 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.  Cool for 10 minutes on wire racks.
ICING:
1. Bring cream to simmer in heavy medium saucepan. Remove from heat. Add chopped chocolate and whisk until melted and smooth. Refrigerate until icing is spreadable, stirring frequently, about 2 hours.
