studyShavuot Celebration

 "God's Gift of Torah"

Saturday Night, May 26

 Shavuot Service - 8:50 PM

Study program will begin at 9:15 PM

Shavuot celebrates God's gift of Torah - but what exactly does that mean? Because Shavuot celebrates God's revelation of Torah to the Jewish people at Sinai, there is an ancient tradition to prepare anew for receiving Torah by studying all night the first night of the holiday. The custom is called "Tikun Leil Shavuot." I certainly admire those Jews who have that passion and stamina. For me, a "token Tikun" will have to do. Please join Rabbi Plavin Shavuot night, Saturday May 26, from 9:15 PM - 11:15 PM as we immerse in Torah. In our study session we will explore what we mean by Divine Revelation.

  • What does the Torah and Rabbinic literature have to say about revelation? We will look at sources and discuss them.
  • What do we mean by revelation as understood within Conservative Judaism?  How do Reform and Orthodox Jews understand the concept? What difference does it make?
  • Finally, we will explore ice cream sundaes and delve into the issue of what toppings best fit the theology of Conservative Judaism.

Join us for this evening of stimulating study. To have adequate texts and ice cream, we request that you pre-register. Call the synagogue at 860-643-9563, ext. 101, or email Rabbi Plavin by clicking here

Brotherhood

SAVE THE DATE!  Wednesday, June 13th at BLACKLEDGE Country Club in Hebron.

The 16th Annual Todd Abitz Memorial Golf Tournament is co-sponsored by BSBI Brotherhood, MACC Charities and HVCC.

We are getting down to very detailed planning and there is an urgent sense that all our Brotherhood members must step up and assist with this endeavor. My expectation is that all Brotherhood members contribute to this event with either some sweat-equity as a volunteer on the day of the event or donating a gift card for our raffle or making a contribution that will allow us to fund some of the expenses associated with the execution of this event. I am asking that those who are not actively participating as a golfer or sponsor or volunteer on the day of the event, contribute a generic gift card valued at $25. If they would rather purchase a store card (grocery, home improvement, drug store, etc) those will be welcomed as well. Just a reminder that our own Synagogue offers gift cards which is exactly what we would like. It would be a double win to purchase a gift card and donate that!

Joke of the Month - from stuffjewishpeoplelike.com

Three men, an Italian, a Frenchman, and a Jew, were condemned to be executed. Their captors told them that they had the right to have a final meal before the execution.

They asked the Frenchman what he wanted.

"Give me the best French wine and French bread," he requested.

So they gave it to him, he ate it, and then they executed him.

Next it was the Italian's turn.

"Give me a great big plate of pasta," said the Italian.

So they brought it to him, he ate it, and then they executed him.

Now it was the Jew's turn.

"I want a big bowl of strawberries, " said the Jew.

"Strawberries!!! They aren't even in season!"

"Nu, so I'll wait..."

Recipe of the Month - Zucchini Parmigiana - from

www.kosherscoop.com  Posted By: Chaia Frishman

3-4 large green zucchini (or equivalent)

1 cup of seasoned bread crumbs

1 egg beaten

Oil for frying

One jar of marinara sauce

16 oz. tub of cottage cheese

1 egg

12 slices American cheese

16 oz bag of mixed cheddar and mozzarella cheese shredded

Directions:

1.  Cut off tops of zucchini and slice them lengthwise into 1 /2 inch slices. You should have enough slices to cover the area of a 9 b 13 inch pan 3 times.  Lay zucchini on a sheet and sprinkle salt on them. Let sit till zucchini sweats. Pat dry.

2.  Dip zucchini in egg and then bread crumbs. Repeat with remaining zucchini. Heat oil in frying pan and fry in batches. Zucchini should be slightly tender when done frying. About 2 minutes on each side. Don't crowd the pan and change the oil midway.

3.  Preheat oven 350.  Pour 1 cup of marinara sauce on the bottom of a 9 by 13 inch pan. Line pan with fried zucchini strips.  Mix egg with cottage cheese. Pour mixture on top of zucchini lined pan. Line another layer of zucchini. Layer American cheese over zucchini. Line with another layer of zucchini. Pour another cup of marinara sauce on layer of zucchini. Sprinkle bag of mixed shredded cheese.

4.  Bake covered for 45 minutes and uncovered till cheese on top is firm and not loose.  Let pan sit for a few minutes till firm.  Slice and enjoy!
