Upcoming Brotherhood Events

Saturday, February 4th - Brotherhood Shabbat.  We will honor the members of the BSBI Brotherhood for their many contributions to our synagogue over the past year.  Members of the Brotherhood will be leading all parts of the service with Ru'ach and Kavanah (spirit and intention).  We invite all members of the BSBI family to join the Brotherhood in this celebration and all are invited to a kiddush luncheon following the service, hosted by the Brotherhood.

 www

Sunday February 5th, BSBI will be participating in the World Wide Wrap program with synagogues all over the world.  The goal of this program is to teach and re-teach everyone interested in learning the mitzvah of laying tefillin.  We will have "tefillin teachers" available in the chapel at 9 am to help anyone who would like to be taught the mitzvah of tefillin.  At 9:20 am, we will all join together and daven the shacharit service, led enthusiastically by Brotherhood members.

Following the service, a breakfast will be provided for all participants and a showing of the documentary "Seeking the 36" produced by Stephen Billias.

Seeking the 36 is a quixotic quest by teenage seeker Nico Lanson to find the Lamed Vov, the Thirty-Six Just Souls of Jewish folklore, in the world today. According to the legend, there are 36 anonymous individuals so righteous that they counterbalance all the sins and follies of mankind, and keep our troubled world afloat. Nico, the main character in the DVD,  meets a mysterious guide at the Holocaust Memorial in Boston who tells her of the legend. Nico's search leads her from ordinary folk in Boston Common, to potential candidates known for their good works, and finally to Rabbi Zalman Schacter-Shalomi, founder of the Jewish Renewal movement. A Q & A will follow the showing.

LectureJanuary Lecture Series - SECRETS & TRUTHS: BETWEEN PHILOSOPHY & MYSTICISM IN JUDAISM

Tuesday, January 31, 7:30 PM

Lecturer: Prof. Ronald Kiener is Professor of Religion at Trinity College and Director of Trinity's Jewish Studies Program.

His primary area of research is  the history of Jewish mysticism in the Middle Ages. Professor Kiener is the co-author of The Early Kabbalah, which was published in 1986 as part of the Classics of Western Spirituality series.

The "Hidden Wisdom" of Kabbalah: How a Secret Religion Became "Open"

Of all the secret teachings of Judaism, none have captured the imagination of both Jew and Gentile alike than the mystical (and supposedly dangerous) Kabbalah. Today, everyone - including pop-star Madonna - talks openly about the healing power of Kabbalah. How did this secret tradition become the talk of Hollywood?

Fee for remaining session: $15 Member $25 Non-members

New Adult Education Course: Fit as a Yidl 2012

5 Thursdays beginning February 16     11:00 AM-12:30 PM

An important Jewish value is Sh'mirat Haguf--taking care of your body. Learn what we know (and don't know) about two crucial aspects of this principle: nutrition and physical fitness. Between research studies that contradict themselves every few years and what we read in the media and popular books, who are we to believe and what should we do to lead healthier lives? Cantor Anita Schubert will teach the course, and she expects you'll be surprised (but pleased) with some of her recommendations. She hopes they will lead you to make important changes in your life (such as once again eating butter, herring, chicken skin, real chopped liver, and kasha!). The course will consist of four sessions in the synagogue plus a shopping expedition to a local supermarket where you'll learn how to understand food labels (including identifying kashrut symbols). Cantor Anita will draw on her background as a nutritionist (M.S. in nutrition from U of MD), recent self-education, and experience in dance and exercise.

Fee: Members $25    Non-Members $40

Texts: Younger Next Year (for Men/for Women) by Chris Crowley & Henry S. Lodge, 2007 $9 and Healthy 4 Life, Weston A. Price Foundation $7

Pre-registration is required, so enough text books can be purchased prior to the start of the course. Mail/drop off your check for $41 made payable to BSBI. If you'd like to take the course, but cannot do so in the daytime, let the cantor know for future planning.

LUNCH AND LEARN

2 Mondays remaining: Feb. 6, 20; 12:00 noon - 1:15 p.m.

On Feb. 6 we will view a short film produced by Stephen Billias entitled "For Goodness Sake." It raises interesting ethical issues.

Bring a salad or sandwich. Coffee and tea will be supplied. The shared lunch hour will include discussions of Jewish ethics.

Engaging in Words of Torah - La-asok b'Divrei Torah

Four sessions of Torah study to examine issues in the Torah portion "Ke Tetzei," Deuteronomy 21:10 - 25:19. This parasha contains commandments on a wide variety of subjects. The class will determine which mitzvoth to examine and investigate how these commandments are or are not observed in our day, and whether they should be.  Rabbi Plavin will serve as a resource in our investigations.

At the first meeting, March 5, verses will be assigned to some participants for study and presentation at subsequent sessions.

Joke of the Week - submitted by Anonymous

I use shampoo in the shower!

When I wash my hair, the shampoo runs down my whole body.
But what I just noticed is that

Printed very clearly on the shampoo label is this warning:

"FOR EXTRA VOLUME AND BODY."
No wonder I have been gaining weight!!!

Well! I have gotten rid of that shampoo and I'm going to

Shower with Dawn dish soap because its label reads:

  "DISSOLVES FAT THAT IS OTHERWISE

DIFFICULT TO REMOVE."

Problem solved!    (If I don't answer the phone I'll be in the shower!)

Recipe of the Week - Eggplant Lasagne from culinarykosher.com

this is actually a very different meaty starter! you won't regret trying...its well worth the extra effort.
Servings 6

Ingredients

2 Eggplants

Filling:

4 tablespoon/s
Olive Oil
4 tablespoon/s
Pine Nuts
2 Small Onion Diced
2 Cloves Garlic Crushed
7 ounce/s Ground Beef
7 ounce/s Ground Veal Or Lamb
1/2 teaspoon/s Salt
0.3 teaspoon/s Cumin
1 tablespoon/s Heaped Tomato Paste
1 pinch/es Cayenne Pepper
2 tablespoon/s Parsley Chopped

Preparation

Cut each eggplant in 9 thin slices lengthwise. Sprinkle slightly with salt all over and leave to drain for one hour in a colander.

Meanwhile prepare the filling: Heat the oil in a frying pan and sauté the pine nuts until golden brown, remove them from the pan with a slotted spoon and keep apart.
Fry the onion and garlic in the oil for a few minutes, add the ground meat and stir-fry over high heat until crumbly and no longer pink. Season with the salt, cumin, cayenne pepper and tomato paste. Stir in the parsley off the heat.

Rinse the eggplant and dry well with kitchen paper.

Pour a layer of olive oil in a soup plate and dip the eggplant slices into the oil on both sides. Place them on a preheated electrical grill and cook until the underside is well browned. Turn over and finish cooking the second side.
Helpful Hint: If you don't have an electrical grill use a grill pan and fry the eggplant on top of the stove.

The grilling process could take a while, the eggplant should be soft and have a nice grilled look. Sprinkle with salt and pepper from the mill.

To assemble place six slices of eggplant in an oven dish, top with half of the meat mixture and the pine nuts.

Cover with a second slice and the remaining meat and pine nuts. Finish with a last slice of eggplant and serve.

You can prepare the dish in advance up to this point and cover with aluminium foil. Reheat later for 10-15 minutes at 400F/200°.

For friday night place before candle lighting in a low oven at 240F/120°.
