Greetings Collaborative INSIGHTS Readers,

2009.  Wow.  What a challenge.

I felt it a good time to get some consult and turned to one of my favorite books of all time.  It is Kevin Kelly's, "New Rules for the New Economy - 10 Radical Strategies For A Connected World".

The book was written in 1998 and I often find my business book's theories don't last.     Every year at this time, I purge those that fit that category and revisit the business books that I believe still hold water.

For the past 10 years - Kevin's book is a #1 read for me.   As the former Editor-At-Large of Wired Magazine, he is conditioned to writing about the future.   In this case, he wrote a book in 1998, that has applications that may be truer in 2008 than during its original publication, ten years ago

Kevin addresses the natural progression and health to a business in devolving and re-evolving again - stronger and in a better place to compete.    No matter if you are a sole-proprietor
or a stakeholder in a multi-national rrsig
corporation, I believe you will
find this book an inspirational and
practical way to manage in 2009.

P.S. I'd be curious if you did picked up a copy - what you thought and if/how it changed your 2009 business strategy.

The Story - Ocean Beauty Seafoods

It's the story.     Food consumers and commercial buyers are increasingly curious about the story behind the food they are buying.     Who are the harvesters?  Who has the resource knowledge?  Where does it come from and what do those communities look and feel like?    Should we partner with them to mutually grow our companies?

Your wish is our demand.   In 2009, we plan to ratchet up our efforts to tell you those stories of companies large and small, east and west, interior and coastal, farming and fishing, high and low tech.

Mark PalmerWe're beginning our efforts with one of the stories that we thought you might find intriguing.    A food company who's history is intertwined with the Alaska's history for the past 100 years.   Yet it is definitely not the company of yesteryear.   It is a value added food manufacturer blending its Alaska roots, investment and resources with internationally market-responsive products that makes the next 100 years very exciting, indeed.

Ocean Beauty Seafoods is one of Alaska's largest (seafood) food processing companies with shore-based processing in 7 coastal communities within Alaska and a supply chain system that covers much of Alaska.   Mark Palmer (left) is Ocean Beauty's President and earlier this year they offered to provide some insights into their story.
