rrGreetings Collaborative INSIGHTS Readers,

This month we take a look at Ketchikan, Alaska.  As always -it's the food supply chain, but in some rather unique and grand ways.   Don't forget, each article offers an opportunity for you to comment and each we write about is highlighted to facilitate your efforts to connect, communicate and collaborate for the strongest sustainable industry possible.

I was asked several times this week by visitors how Collaborative INSIGHTS and Global Food Collaborative is supported. In some ways, it isn't that different then the Community Supported Agriculture Program we are describing in the Full Circle Farm article below.

Global Food Collaborative is fully supported by its membership. If you like what we are doing, we'd appreciate your mentioning that to our members and even better -  support their businesses with your business.

Your Ketchikan (and Alaskan) Neighbor May Have A Healthy New Secret

Bob at Full CircleI'm sure all of us have a bit of envy for the neighbor with the latest smart phone or most energy efficient vehicle, but what about the neighbor who has found out how to source fresh produce on a year round, consistent basis - even in remote locations throughout Alaska?     Do they look healthier?  happier?   There is a good chance they do, because they've discovered a relatively new business that is taking Alaska by storm - Full Circle Farms.

We'll bet you will agree it is the next big thing!  Comment accepted at end of article.

OceansAlaska Becoming Reality In Ketchikan

Nearly 3 years ago, I met Art King of the Naukuti Oyster Shellfish Nursery.    Naukuti is located in Southeast Alaska about 100 air miles northwest of Ketchikan.   Art not only shared the latest farming news, but urged me to review a CD he provided about OceansAlaska called Tipping The Balance.

We featured a story on Art, the farms and OceansAlaska, but 3 years is a long time ago and the plans for OceansAlaska have jumped off the CD to become real professionals, visible construction and a more definitive role in Alaska's supply chain of food.

800,000 Alaska Visitors Can Learn About Our Commercial Seafoods
Marketing An Industry ......Marketing Alaska Seafood

Bringing the Bering Sea 1600 miles closer to the 800,000 summertime Alaska cruise visitors is the business of The Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour. Operated during the cruise season (May-September), this company features "real time" harvesting by experienced Alaskan commercial fishermen.

What makes this tour so unique, however, is the opportunity for so many Alaskan visitors to learn about Alaska's commercial fisheries, gear types, regions and species that are such a major part of Alaska's history.   It is an important part of what visitors come to Alaska to experience and yet so few get an opportunity to see for themselves, due to Alaska's distance and geography ...... until now.
