More Than Just Saying "No": Guiding Your Child to Positive Behaviors Silja

You may hear the terms discipline, punishment, and guidance when it comes to addressing children's behavior. Debates and discussions are sparked continuously over what is the best way to discipline children. Are timeouts useful? Just how can I get my three-yearold to behave? All parents want their children to show positive behaviors and at the very least not be disruptive, or hurt anyone, including themselves.

Each of us has a few different ideas on what behavior is acceptable or not. But, because we live in a society with laws and social expectations, we learn to adapt our behavior. We obey the laws and tend to meet most societal expectations. If we don't, we learn to deal with the consequences. The same rules apply to how children learn to "behave". Children's positive behavior is guided by knowing the expectations, as well as the results of their behavior.

Autumn, Alphabet, & Orange

As the days get shorter, the temperature cooler, and the leaves start changing colors the children will be learning about autumn. Concepts children will be exploring include apples, leaves, fall animals, and pumpkins.  Children will do activities such as apple prints, making pumpkin bread, leaf rubbings, and our favorite gross motor activity-jumping in leaf piles!!

Staff will also continue our Letter of the Week curriculum, focusing this month on letters F-J.  Letter of the Week allows children opportunities for book handling, letter- sound awareness, letter recognition, and pre-reading and writing skills.  Immersing children through letter crafts, dramatic play, poems, and games will build on all developmental domains.

The color of the month is ORANGE.
If your child wears orange to school they will get to show it off at circle time.

Autumn

Autumn winds begin to blow.
Colored leaves fall fast and slow.
Twirling, whirling all around,
'Til at last, they touch the ground.
We strive to build positive relationships between Stay & Play staff and families.  Please feel free to offer any suggestions that might make our program the best in the area.
Sincerely,
Stay & Play Staff
