News from the Director

DanielleWe are excited to introduce our newest staff member, Danielle Eldon.  Danielle has received her education through the 2 year vocational program at Portsmouth High School.  Her experience includes the two year internship,  two years in formal childcare settings with infants through preschool, and years of babysitting.  She has also received awards in Storytelling and Future Homemakers of America.  We look forward to her bright and energetic personality.  Please introduce yourselves to Danielle when at Stay & Play.

As new families are joining our program I wanted to bring up some fun ways for families to be involved.  We always welcome family members to join the children and share a special activity.  Parents can do a story, craft or cooking activity with the children.  Please give staff plenty of notice so they can plan accordingly.  Also, we will be hosting several family events including Spaghetti Supper, Fall Festival, Pancake Breakfast, and several other celebrations.

In addition, we hope to offer some short parenting classes on child development, positive discipline, and fun activities to do with children starting in January.  If there is a topic that you are interested in, please let me know.

I wanted to offer the opportunity to start a Parent Board for the program.  Please contact me if you are interested.

All About Me, Alphabet, & Yellow

This month the children will be experiencing an "All About Me" theme.  Concepts children will be exploring include self recognition, body awareness and appropriate movement, family members and their roles, appropriate play with peers, following simple directions through crafts and games, and personal favorites.  Children will do activities such as face matching, body part puzzles, washing babies, and shape homes.

Staff will also start our Letter of the Week curriculum, focusing this month on letters A-D.  Letter of the Week allows children opportunities for book handling, letter- sound awareness, letter recognition, and pre-reading and writing skills.  Immersing children through letter crafts, dramatic play, poems, and games will build on all developmental domains.

Each month we will also focus on a specific color.  Watch for lots of yellow this month.

The Mystery of Shoes

Shoes come in twos
but they're easy to lose.

I have a pair
I can't find anywhere.

They're red like race cars
and fast like track stars.

If I don't find them soon,
I'll be sent to my room.

Look-there they are! Together like twins!
Now, which shoe should my left foot go in?

Things That Come in Twos

Ask your child to name some things from the poem that come in pairs or sets of two (shoes, twins).  Ask him to help you think of some other things that come in twos.  Your child might mention eyes, hands, feet, gloves, or other things.
We strive to build positive relationships between Stay & Play staff and families.  Please feel free to offer any suggestions that might make our program the best in the area.
Sincerely,
Stay & Play Staff
