Little Sand Fire ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
![]() It started with a lightening strike and was managed at first as a controlled burn, but unusually high winds took it to another level quickly. It now encompasses over 3700 acres - certainly nowhere near as large as the wildfire in New Mexico - but an indication of the dryness in our area. Allan, Dusty, and our grandson Kyler, are quite busy irrigating pastures, getting no rain breaks. While this area is always a few days away from a drought, this year is particularly dry and challenging. Although June is typically a dry month, we are hoping that we will get some relief soon. Pray for rain.

Visit Pagosa Springs ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A number of folks have taken advantage of our Visit Pagosa Springs offer and have been very pleased with the value. Most have been able to stay in a 1 or 2 bedroom Wyndham timeshare condo for less than $75 per night, and in the off season for less than $50 per night.
If you are thinking about coming to Pagosa to pick up your meat, be sure to call or email me to find out what it might cost to stay. Our published rates on the website are regular pricing, but I am often able to get a better deal, so be sure to check with me. Besides the hot springs' pools and river tubing downtown, the resort has fantastic 18 hole and 9 hole golf courses, tennis courts, a recreation center with pool and racquet ball courts, mini golf, and private lake fishing. Many of these amenities are free to resort guests. Summer is booking up fast, so let me know ASAP if you would like to visit.

The Lexicon of Sustainability: The Story of an Egg ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Can learning the meaning of a single term actually help change the food system? David Evans and Alexis Koefoed think so. These poultry farmers explain the real story behind such terms as "cage free," "free range," and "pasture raised" so that consumers can make informed decisions when they go to their local supermarket.
Click on the link below and watch the PBS video. I found it quite interesting, since I have tried to find eggs in the grocery that were comparable to the wonderful eggs we used to get from our chickens in Missouri. I expect the shell to be very hard, and the yolks to be orange. This video explains why even the "free range" eggs that I bought "paled" in comparison in color and quality, but not in price. We are now promoting our eggs as "Free Range Eggs From Pastured Chickens." Just as it is in buying your meat, it is nice to know where your eggs are coming from so that you can rest assured that you are getting the quality that you want. |

In Closing ... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
About a week after I returned from a visit to see her, my 96 year old mom fell and cracked her pelvis and her wrist. She is in a nursing home recovering, and anxious to get home. The same day we found out about my mom, Allan's emergency brake failed and his truck (empty) went over the side of the road and down a hill, ending up in a ditch, nose down. It is now in the shop. Later that week the wheel on our cargo trailer froze and caused a great deal of damage to the wheel and axle. Fortunately no one was hurt. Your prayers for our family would be greatly appreciated. We are feeling a great deal of stress, but know that God's grace is sure. We can always look at others' misfortunes to be reminded of our good fortune, so hopefully hearing of our troubles will find you grateful for your lack of the same. God bless you all.
