Colorado Wildflowers
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hagerman Tunnel My sister took this picture at the Hagerman Tunnel Trail a few weeks ago. The Colorado wildflowers are outrageously beautiful this summer. Allan is headed up to the mountains for a 10 day above timberline deer hunt with his brother this coming weekend, and he said the wildflowers were amazing in the area north of Durango where they will be setting up camp. While the rains were slow to come, we are being blessed almost daily with afternoon showers. The berries did not form well because of the lack of rain early on so the bears are on the prowl for food. Every night our dogs wake us up as the bears come in, scouting for something to eat.

We are expecting some gorgeous fall colors this year, so if you are looking for a place to see God's work in full technicolor we invite you to check out Pagosa Springs. You will find the weather in September and October to be delightful, and the colors are guaranteed not to disappoint.


New Bull
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shorthorn Bull 2011 Allan and I traveled to Nebraska to pick up our newest bull in August. He is just a yearling but promises to bring some wonderful genetics to our herd. Allan has been studying the Shorthorn breed for a few years and feels certain that by crossing Shorthorn with our Angus/Hereford cows we will get even better meat for our program.

Allan works particularly hard to find just the right genetics for producing tender, flavorful meat. At this point in the game he is extremely pleased with his cows and calves and feels we are poised for some amazing meat in the coming years. Personally I think the meat is already amazing, but as I said, he is always trying to get it even better.


New Heifers
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shorthorn Heifers 2011 The bull is a pure, native, registered Shorthorn from a herd that goes back nearly 100 years. We decided to buy 3 heifers along with the bull to help continue this wonderful line of animals. Pagosa Springs Farmers Market

Farmers Market 2011 We added a GrassRoots Grill booth to our GrassRoots Meats booth this year, and it has been quite successful. We have served Green Chili Burritos, Soft Tacos, and Sloppy Joes, but it seems our GrassRoots Burger is far and away the most popular item.

Our Farmers Market meat sales are up about 25% over last year, so perhaps the Grill is encouraging folks to buy our meat. Farmers Market is always fun - once the work of setting it all up is done. Then there is always the takedown, which of course takes more time than setting up. If you are in our area be sure to stop by the market, Saturdays from 9:00 to 1:00, in the Ponderosa Lumber parking lot on Highway 160 west of downtown Pagosa Springs.


New Cows
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
New Cowa 2011 I guess this newsletter is going to be all about pictures. A picture is worth 1000 words . . . so I guess I should make it short and simple this month. Earlier this summer we bought a slug of new cows, most of which have calved, and I thought you might like to see a picture of some of them. If you look in the left foreground you will see the new heifers.

For the most part we are very pleased with all of the new additions. For sure anything that Allan does not like will be headed to the sale barn, but it looks like there will not be many. Allan put the new bull in with the cows as soon as we got back from Nebraska, so we are looking forward to some amazing beef in about three years. That's right, it takes three years from conception to your table - a long time to wait to find out if we made the right choice. However, we are confident that the future is going to be great!

In Closing ...

Sadly, as I write this Allan is in Oklahoma at the funeral of his longtime and dear friend, David Barton. David, who was only 53 years young, had been watching over our cattle for many years now and will be missed not just for his tremendous help but also for the wonderful comradery that they enjoyed whenever Allan traveled to Oklahoma. David found out in April that he had pancreatic cancer and very soon lost his battle with it. We would appreciate your prayers for his family, and for us, during this very difficult time.
