Welcome to June

My goodness, it does seem as though summer is struggling to break through the door here in Pagosa. We are still experiencing very cool temperatures in our area of the country, contributing to the wild and crazy tornadoes back east. The late snows have provided an abundance of irrigation water, though, giving us a very good start for the grasses, but more sun and warmer weather would be very welcome.

Hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. Do you have an interesting vacation planned for this summer? Got a Green Thumb?

Greenhouse Although the cooler weather has even affected my greenhouse, it is doing well and finally coming on strong. While I wondered if the seeds would ever germinate, towards the end of May we had a nice warm week and they burst forth. You might have heard me shouting for joy!

I had some brocolli, chard, kale and spinach spring back from last year's planting, which was a pleasant surprise. I absolutely love watching my plants grow. I have a small outside plot as well, but the ground is not warm enough to plant it yet. Perhaps next week. Living in Colorado has its shortcomings when it comes to gardening - thus the greenhouse. It is amazing how much food can be grown even in a coldframe as small as this one. If you have any gardening stories or tips to share, we would love to hear them.


Expanding the Herd
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are in the process of expanding our herd with the purchase of about 30 head of bred cows, an effort to keep up with the growing demand. This is a very exciting time for GrassRoots Meats with new calves being born, new cows added to our program, and new friends added to our loyal customer list.

We partner with a couple of other producers who use our same genetic program, and the calves they have produced for the 2011 season look fantastic. Allan is so pleased with all the animals this year, giving affirmation to his breeding program. It takes 3 years from conception to finished animal, so each year when the animals reach the stage where he can see their quality and potential it is quite gratifying to know that his program is working. We should have an abundance of excellent meat for you throughout this year.

Have you ever thrown a Rump Roast on the grill? We tried it last year after a Farmer's Market customer recommended it and oh my, what a treat! For June our Rump Roasts are only $5.99 per pound. In Closing ...

While we are not seeing any signs of recovery in the local housing and job markets, and so much of the country is reeling with the effects of bad weather, we have much to be thankful for and at the top of our list is you, our faithful customers.
