Successful Turkey Hunt
2011 Turkey Hunt We had a wonderful trip to Oklahoma with our family in April. It was a multi-purpose trip in that Allan worked with the cattle and moved them to a new lease while our daughter, her husband, and two of her children turkey hunted. We also held our annual corporate meeting, which is always interesting.

Our granddaughter Taylor, 13, and our grandson Kyler, 8, shot their first turkeys. Lisa and her husband Garrett also got their turkeys. Pictured here is grandpa Allan and Taylor with her bird. Wish I had a picture with all of them but we just were not able to get one. But it was an exciting hunt and a great family time, as well as a much needed vacation for me. Turkey hunting in western Oklahoma and the panhandle of Texas is amazing, and should any of you wish to learn more about hunting there please call our good friend, Danny Pierce, at Rush Creek Guide Service, 806-323-3030, or click on the link below for more information.

The Rest of the Story . . .
When we got back we were unpleasantly surprised to find that the walk-in freezer that we were renting from a restaurant in Pagosa, while we were waiting for our new freezer and compressor to come in, went down, and all of the meat we had in it was lost. It was a real mess to clean up. The local wildlife park received a wonderful donation of meat which they greatly appreciated, but we lost the equivelent of about 5 animals.

So we are scrambling to process meat and get back on track. Some of you who placed orders during this time are already aware of our situation, and we appreciate your patience while we were restocking. We are in fair shape right now, and are working hard to make certain we have enough supply for the near future. We are also buying quite a few new cows for our program, so supplies should also be good next year and beyond.

Updated Cooking Tips
After many requests I recently updated the Cooking Tips on our website. Hopefully this will help those of you who don't know how to cook some of our meat cuts, or those of you who are just looking for ideas or guidelines on how to cook them.

Check it out and please let me know what you think. If you have any ideas or suggestions I would love to hear them, and would be happy to expand this section even more. Cooking is a passion of mine, as is evident in my growing midsection! For me life is not a box of chocolates, but an adventure in cooking. I love to experiment when I am cooking - sometimes it turns out great, and sometimes not so great. For me life is all about taking chances. The successes make it all worth it.

A Funny Story
I want to share a story that one of our customers emailed us. Apparently he had suggested to a client that he increase his intake of animal protein at each meal. Three weeks later his client called to say that he felt horrible, the worst he had felt in his entire life.

Our friend asked a few pertinent questions and discovered that his client had gone to Costco and bought a massive bag of frozen, deep-fried chicken parts and had eaten nothing but that at every meal and snack for three weeks. No fruit, no vegetables, nothing but microwaved, deep-fried chicken parts and water. Our friend was surprised the guy was even still alive! While this story is extreme, we all know that there are lots of crazy ideas out there about what makes a wholesome diet. The food battle goes on - so keep making those good choices. And don't forget to tell your friends about us.

May Day Special
Guess I don't need to tell you that in light of all the meat we lost, coming up with a special this month was not easy. So we are sending out our May Day Call . . .

For the entire month take 15% off any custom order of $250 or more. This is your chance to create Your Own Personalized Special and it can include beef, lamb, and/or chicken. For many of you this discount could offset all, or nearly all, of your freight. It's a great opportunity to stock up so get busy creating your own personal May Day Special.

In Closing ...
We have been struggling with the need to increase pricing on our meat and are forewarning you that if our costs continue to escalate we may be headed in that direction. We hate this because we know that you also are struggling to contain your own costs during this recession, and should we decide to do it we will try to keep the increase as small as possible. Happy Mother's Day to each and every one of you amazing mothers who work so hard to keep your families healthy and happy. God bless you all.
