Christmas gift suggestions: To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To all, charity. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect.

Greetings!
I had the pleasure of spending the Thanksgiving Holiday in NC and Tennessee. I had the blessing of worshiping at my favorite church in Copper Hill, TN. Copper Hill is the oldest mining town in the US and the now closed Bera Bera Mine was the largest and oldest in the US. The Methodist church sits high above the town on a hill of what is probably slag from the old mine. The church has a membership of between 100-125 members and its pastor is the oldest pastor still preaching in the conference.
Copper Hill is unique! From the time you hit the parking lot anyone else who hit it at the same time has already greeted you at least twice. By the time you get to the front door, the greeters have already said your name. You only have to attend once and these people have got it. The ushers make sure you are seated next to someone on your pew that is going to talk with you (no loners here) and suddenly, you're family. Mostly the laity, except the sermon, manages the service even when the preacher is there. Joys and concerns are really joys and concerns. A single unemployed mother and her two kids stood up and thanked the congregation for helping to fix her little house for winter. Another member shares that; yes, they have four community Christmas mission projects going and times are financially tough but they need help with one more. They all clapped and cheered as it was announced that their oldest member, over 100 years young, would be the Marshal in the Christmas Parade next Saturday.
The pastor takes pride in as he puts it "I trained them well!" "They carry on with or without me and that is as it should be." All of this is a good thing since he is battling cancer.
His sermon title was "In The Valley". It was about being Thankful for all things and about Relationships and the most precious one a Relationship with Jesus Christ who makes all things possible and bearable. He thanked them for teaching him about relationships that truly matter. He reminded them that the most precious gift came in the form of a mere babe who grew into a man and who came as our savior to teach us about relationships that truly matter.
As I left Copper Hill that day up winding isolated roads deep into the hills, I knew that I had been part of a very special time. I had been with family and we as a family of faith had been truly in relationship with the Christ.
May each of you take time during this very special season to find and be with that family of faith for you- in Relationship.
Grace and Peace,
Donna Ratzlaff

Ditty Bag Sorting Day a Smashing Success
54 volunteers from across our District and as far away as Tampa gather in November to pack Adult Ditty Bags for distribution around the county. So far over 2,299 Adult "little bags of hope" have now become "little bags of joy." Thank you to all our UMW Units who painstakingly sewed, stuffed and checked their bags. You have made a tremendous difference in the life of a homeless man, woman and child. The count of Children's Bags will be in the end of December. Look for the grand total in our January newsletter. |
CAN YOU HELP US MAKE THEIR NEW YEAR BRIGHT?
At The Children of the World Preschool we have two families who need some on going assistance so their child can stay in school. If you or your church can help please send any amount marked Scholarship NEED CWP to United Methodist Cooperative Ministries. Help us give a child a chance!
Kevin
Kevin is one of our pre-k student. His family is originally from Vietnam. He is being raised by his father who unfortunately recently lost his job. This Christmas time will be financially challenging for this family of two.
Having no income, the father had already informed the preschool that he will need to pull out Kevin from school since he can no longer afford to pay the $60 weekly fee.
Can you extend a helping hand so Kevin can continue with his preschool education?
Chitwin's Family

Chitwin is the newest student in the 3 year old class of the Children of the World Preschool (a program of the United Methodist Cooperative Ministries). He arrived in St. Petersburg with his Mom and Dad last July from a refugee camp in Thailand. The family is originally from Myanmar formerly known as Burma. They are one of the 45 Burmese refugee families resettled in the Tampa Bay area early this year. Last October, Chitwin and his parents welcome the newest edition to their family - "Jimmy" who was born prematurely and had to stay for a couple of weeks at the All Children Hospital. A week ago, Jimmy was able to go home.
Just like any other newcomer in this country, the family has been struggling to adjust to a new way of life, culture and language while trying to meet their daily needs. Although, they have received donated (used) household and personal items they still have some unmet needs. Currently, the family lives in a one bedroom apartment and shares a queen size mattress for the entire family to sleep on. The preschool has provided baby clothes and a crib for little Jimmy but the family really needs another mattress for Chitwin to sleep on. The parents also need help in paying for Chitwin's school and transportation fees. Seventeen dollars ($17) a day is enough to cover Chitwin's tuition and six dollars ($ 6) a day will pay for his bus transportation.
Your support will make a difference in Chitwin's family.
