Dear Members and Friends,

On behalf of SACC-DC, I hope each of you had a restful and pleasant summer. Our chamber has not taken much of a hiatus this past summer as we have geared up and already presented one terrific luncheon meeting, an exciting crayfish party, and have back-to-back events for the remainder of the year. If you haven't had the opportunity to attend one or more of our events so far you still have several opportunities to join in the fun.

First of all, I would like to introduce you to our newest intern, Ms. Malin Vikström, who joins us as a graduate student from Northern Virginia Community College and will be with us for the next several months. Note that Pernilla Jonsson, our membership chairperson, has been able to recruit two new corporate members over the summer-traditionally a slow period. Congratulations to Pernilla and welcome aboard to Finnegan and Pathfinder, I look forward to meeting your representatives at the next SACC-DC event.

As a recap, on September 14th our chamber in kind conjunction with Volvo Group North America's sponsorship, held our annual crayfish party event in traditional setting at the House of Sweden. Particularly notable were the hearty singing, good cheer and fellowship, along with plentiful icy-cold vodka snaps---and there just might be a connection between the three! Thank you to all of the dignitaries who attended and for the exuberant singing led by Amb. Hafström who, along with his lovely wife Eva, can always be counted on to attend and help celebrate this traditional event.

However, coinciding with our crayfish event was the 13th annual Entrepreneurial Days event (E-Days) sponsored by SACC-USA and held this year in Växjö and Karlskrona, Sweden. Those of you who could attend were treated to yet another networking rich environment set in the abundant forest region of Skåne. Note too that I had the personal honor of being elected chairman of SACC-USA at the annual meeting in Växjö in which I will serve a two-year term. I am informed that I am the first American to hold the chairmanship. After being involved in SACC events for going on two decades, I have deeply-held thoughts on how to continue the success of our SACC network and hopefully increase the value of belonging to this international network. I look forward to working with each of the regional SACC chambers to increase our cohesiveness and unify our corporate practices.

Meanwhile, back in Washington, DC, on September 22, our chamber hosted a luncheon for our corporate members to meet and discuss international trade issues with Dr. Ewa Björling, Sweden's Minister for Trade. Those who attended were treated to a lively discussion as well as getting first-hand information on the rollout of the Swedish-American Green Alliance initiative.

On the 13th of October, we held our annual Swedish Embassy Open Annual Golf Tournament at the prestigious Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club in Leesburg, Virginia. The tournament was followed by an awards reception at the Washington, DC residence of Ambassador Hafström. Our executive director Maja Persson worked extremely hard making the tournament arrangements along with our golf tournament committee to put together a memorable event and show our appreciation to our sponsors and members for their continued support of our chamber. We ended up with an exceptional tournout alomst 100 players showed up to compete in the tournament. We extend our great appreciation to our Platinum sponsor, the noted Nammo AS group. Our Gold sponsors include (alphabetically): Saab North America, Inc., Skanska, Inc., and Volvo Car Corporation. Our Silver sponsors include (alphabetically): Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP; Embassy of Sweden--Office of Defense Cooperation; General Electric; Mercuri Urval; NetServer; Raytheon; R. J. Banks; and The Swedish School. The open beverage cart service to help maintain the vigor of our tournament players throughout the day was sponsored by Volvo Group North America, Inc. Moreover, a brand-new Volvo car was set aside as a prize for a hole-in-one at a specific hole by the generosity of our member company, Martens Volvo. On behalf of our chamber, I personally extend my appreciation to all of our sponsors for their kind generosity which once again has enabled SACC-DC to host a truly first-class golfing and social event.

On October 25 our chamber in conjunction with the Embassy of Sweden hosted His Royal Highness Prince Daniel of Sweden to attend a private meeting of selected attendees to discuss the role of the Swedish-American chamber network and how Swedish companies work within the U.S. business system to advocate their issues to domestic government representatives.

Mark your calendars now, as one of our most memorable events of the year will take place on December 1 at the House of Sweden where our corporate member Ericsson will sponsor and host in conjunction with our chamber our annual Holiday Event featuring guest speakers, a Lucia procession, and the ever-anticipated traditional glögg - sure to help keep you warm and kick off the holiday season. Note that other events too numerous to list here can always be found on our website at www.sacc-dc.org.

On behalf of Maja, Malin and myself, we appreciate your continued support of our chamber and promise to continue to return your investment by endeavouring to provide you with interesting and relevant programs and ever-growing networking opportunities.

Best regards,

Bradley J. Olson

His Royal Highness Prince Daniel of Sweden
 visiting SACC Washington DC
From the left: Jonathan Miller, Tapio Christiansen, Brad Olson, HRH Prince Daniel, H.E. Jonas Hafström, Katie Yehl, Wes Walters, Fredrik Rabe, Barbara Baffer, Karl Reichelt, Magnus Eriksson

Prince Daniel of Sweden recently spent a week in Washington DC, his first official trip abroad. The Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce in Washington DC had the honor to host Prince Daniel for an event focused on lobbying.

"We are proud to introduce the SACC-USA network to Prince Daniel and show him what SACC-USA and SACC-DC are doing to promote and accelerate trade, commerce and investment between Sweden and the U.S.," said Bradley J. Olson, Chairman of SACC-USA and SACC-DC.

Lobbying is one of the core businesses in Washington, and one of the main reasons why so many large Swedish corporations have a presence in Washington DC. Seven of them: Volvo Cars, Ericsson, Volvo Group, Saab, Skanska, IKEA and Kreab Gavin Anderson, all proud members of SACC-DC, generously shared their knowledge and experiences in the lobbying field.

"These great Swedish companies recognize that in order to succeed in the U.S. market, you have to be effective at dealing with government, both at the federal and state levels.  They lend a particularly valuable perspective to how foreign companies need to work in Washington, and their business success reflects that." said Tapio Christiansen, Executive Director at Kreab Gavin Anderson, who started the seminar by giving an overview of how lobbying works in Washington DC and identifying the main actors in this arena.

Following Mr. Christiansen's presentation, each company executive talked about their current activities and future visions for the U.S. market. The meeting concluded with a Q&A session and discussion.are doing very well in the U.S. and part of that is due to what they achieve by lobbying here in Washington. That is why we think it is very interesting for the Prince to have this opportunity to learn some about it,
said Tapio Christiansen, Director at Kreab Gavin Anderson, who started the seminar by giving an overview of how lobbying works in Washington DC and identifying the main actors on this arena.

Following Mr. Christiansen's presentation each company executive talked about their current activities and future visions for the U.S. market. The meeting concluded with a Q&A session and discussion.

At the conclusion of the event Chairman Olson presented Prince Daniel with a gift, a framed document betowing him with lifelong honorary membership in SACC-USA, assuring that Prince Daniel and his family will always be warmly welcomed into the SACC network.

Swedish Embassy Open 2011

Close to 100 players defied the pooring rain and bravely participated in the 23rd Annual Swedish Embassy Open at beautiful Raspberry Falls Golf and Hunt Club in Leesburg, VA. Players enjoyed a Swedish-American breakfast as well as a cookout barbeque lunch and they all did their best to win the hole-in-one prize - a brand new Volvo car - although no one succeeded.  A big thank you goes out to all sponsors for their contributions and to Raspberry Falls Golf & Hunt Club for their fantastic service and expertise, making this tournament reach its high standard.

In the evening, the award cermony was held at H.E. Jonas Hafström's residence where guests were treated to an amazing buffet and refreshments. We greatly appreciate the generosity and hospitality of Ambassador Hafström and his wife Mrs. Eva Hafström and thank them for opening their home to us. Next year's Swedish Embassy Open will be held on Thursday, October 25th, 2012. Be sure to mark the date in your calendar already now to not miss out on this important and fun networking event!

Corporate Luncheon with Minister of Trade
Ewa Björling

Dr. Ewa Björling, Sweden's Minister for Trade, flanked by H.E. Jonas Hafström, Ambassador of Sweden to the U.S. and SACC-DC Chairman Bradley J. Olson

On September 22nd SACC Washington DC hosted Sweden's Minister for Trade, Dr. Ewa Björling, for an exclusive event with the Chamber's corporate membership. The attending corporate members enjoyed a roundtable luncheon with the Minister and had the opportunity to learn more about the Minister's efforts to double the Swedish export by 2015. "Sweden has to increase its export by 15% on average each year in order to reach the target 2015. Last year we reached 14% and the first six months of 2011 looks promising," stated Minster Björling. Due to a fragile global economy it will take time and patience from both Sweden and the U.S. to reach their export goals. Minister Björling also talked about the importance of the regional free trade agreements and believe the recently entered agreement between EU and South Korea will help boost the trade significantly between those two markets in the coming five years. The event was concluded with a Q&A session and open discussion.
