Dear Members and Friends:

Finally, spring is on its way and Washington, DC will soon be in its most beautiful state -- cherry blossom time! Our Chamber has already held two great events that you can read about below and we are looking forward to holding many more exciting events during 2011.

House of Sweden, the award-winning building where SACC-DC is fortunate to reside, has re-designed and rebuilt several apartments on the 4th and 5th floors into both full- and modest-sized office space now available for companies to lease. We encourage you to contact Maja Persson at SACC-DC to help arrange a tour of the new office space if you are interested in a rare opportunity to secure a unique office location on the Potomac river.

Note also that our umbrella organization, SACC-USA, recently took advantage of the new office space and moved in to House of Sweden from their previous location in Alexandria, Virginia. SACC-DC would like to warmly welcome them to the building and extend a special welcome to SACC-USA's new Executive Director, Therese Lindé. We look forward to close and fruitful cooperation with Therese and SACC-USA.

Some other news connected with House of Sweden is that the Embassy was elected "Best Embassy" in Washington, DC by the readers of the Washington Post Express. We congratulate the Embassy on their public diplomacy programs and encourage you to visit their current exhibition under the theme "Fabric of Life." Several interesting events are planned for the spring and you can read more about that by clicking here

Finally I would like to send a friendly reminder to please pay your membership dues for 2011 if you haven't already done so. Our Chamber cannot survive without the vital support from its members shown in significant part by paying your dues in a timely fashion. We appreciate your loyalty to our Chamber and look forward to continuing to provide you with a great return on your membership investment by offering interesting and entertaining events and inner-circle networking opportunities throughout the year.

Thank you for your attention and I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.

Best regards,

Bradley J. Olson

Breakfast Meeting with Karl Reichelt,
Executive Vice President of Skanska Infrastructure Development - Americas

  Karl ReicheltSkanska Breakfast 2011
Photos by: Alan Schlaifer

On Thursday March 17th, 60+ people gathered in House of Sweden for breakfast and presentation by Skanska ID's Executive VP Karl Reichelt who provided an interesting and engaging discussion about Skanska and their current and upcoming public-private partnership projects around the world, such as the construction of the world's largest PPP hospital New Karolinska and the 61-kilometer, 6-lane toll highway, Autopista Central outside Santiago, Chile. In the DC region Skanska Infrastructure Development is working with the Virginia Department of Transportation to design, build, construct, finance, operate and maintain the Downtown Tunnel/Midtown Tunnel/MLK Extension project in Norfolk and Portsmouth, Virginia.

These projects are examples of ways Skanska is creatively helping state & local governments leverage funding through Private Public Partnerships. Karl also gave an overview of Skanska's Green Initiative, and their strong commitment to being a leading green project developer and contractor.

Karl ended the presentation with a photo of his winning foursome team from the 2008 SACC-DC Golf Tournament. Chairman Bradley J. Olson thanked Karl and handed over a gift of top-quality golf balls.

Annual Meeting 2011
Diplomacy in the Age of Twitter
Adam and Brad
Bradley J. Olson and Adam Sharp

This year's Annual Meeting, held on January 20th at House of Sweden, began with the election of board members for SACC-DC members. You can see a complete list of the board members in the left margin of this newsletter. The elections were followed by an enlightening presentation on Diplomacy in the Age of Twitter by SACC-DC member Adam Sharp. Sharp recently began as Twitter's Manager for Government and Political Partnerships in Washington DC and shared with us how Twitter can serve as a platform for diplomacy and business. For example, Twitter has facilitated communication in times of crises in countries such as Pakistan, Haiti and Chile.  Businesses use tweets to advertise new products, job openings or business-related news.  Whether for politics or business, Sharp shared how everyone can leverage Twitter for their professional needs.

The presentation was followed by a networking reception.  Guests enjoyed champagne, cheese and crackers while mingling in the atrium.  Thank you to all that attended!

We would like to extend a big thank you to our event sponsor:
