The SACCess
A Newsletter from SACC Washington DC  Volume 18, July 2009

Dear Members and Guests,

Welcome to the summer issue of SACCess.  I know it is hard to believe, but we are already halfway through 2009. We have been busy during the first half of 2009, and look forward to even busier fall. As you may be aware, Sweden assumed the EU Presidency on July 1st, providing Sweden with a major leadership role to help shape international policymaking on a host of issues in the EU and globally throughout the end of this year.  In May and June, SACC-DC organized two events focused on the EU presidency, highlighting the Swedish priorities. One of the events was co-organized with the US Chamber of Commerce (USCC) and held at their facilities. You can read more about that exciting event below.  We are looking to host similar events to showcase Sweden and the EU after the summer holidays (industrisemester).
On June 2nd SACC-DC together with other Nordic and Baltic Chambers of Commerce in DC hosted a luncheon speaker from NSI, a local and state government lobbying and policy group. It was a successful event with many attendees.  Organizing events in cooperation with other organizations such as the Nordic and Baltic Chambers, as well as the USCC, is something that we intend to continue doing in the future. When we expand our network and bring in more partners, our events become more relevant and more rewarding for all involved. We hope that you will make every effort to attend one or more of these events in the future, as the opportunity to increase your relevant network improves with your participation.
Please have a safe and enjoyable summer and we look forward to seeing you in the fall.

Best regards,

Focus: Swedish EU Presidency

On June 11th members of SACC Washington DC attended a seminar organized by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and the Embassy of Sweden addressing the topic "How can the Swedish EU Presidency Strengthen Transatlantic Cooperation?" The audience heard from Swedish Deputy Foreign Minister, Frank Belfrage, and Swedish Deputy Minister for Environment, Åsa-Britt Karlsson, who both discussed the priorities for the upcoming Swedish EU presidency. Particular attention was given to the global economic crisis and re-stabilizing global capital markets, EU enlargement and relations with neighboring countries, as well as United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December and the urgency to create a successful Copenhagen agreement to prevent global warming and climate changes.  All of which depends on a strong and cooperative US-EU partnership.
