"TAKE TIME TO THINK"
Jeff Yalden International Newsletter March 2009
|
|
Greetings from Jeff Yalden International!
Spring is almost here! Are you ready? Boy am I! This winter seems to want to stick around!
When I think of Spring, I think of of being outside more, and enjoying the weather, home improvement projects, walks, blooming flowers and tress.... and in the case of the youth I work with- I see Prom Season is coming upon us! How fun! Getting dressed to the nines, renting a limo, having a night out with friends! Prom is one of the most memorable times, think back and remember yours. I vividly remember mine and I want to make sure that while we enjoy this time, take pictures, enjoy and plan.. we take the time to discuss a few serious things as well.
Along with this rite of passage, as educators, parents and mentors for us we think of Alcohol and Drug Awareness. It's a fact. The staggering statistics are overwhelming and scary! In lieu of the upcoming season, I have taken the time to do some research and provide you with some horrifying statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Association. I copied these statistics from their most recent Report on Young Drivers Traffic Safety Fact Sheet.
Among 15- to 20-year-old drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2007, 31 percent (364) of those who did not have valid operator's licenses at the time of the crash also had previous license suspensions or revocations . For the same age group, 31 percent of the drivers who were killed in motor vehicle crashes during 2007 had been drinking.
All States and the District of Columbia now have 21-year-old minimum drinking age laws. In 2007, 31 percent of the young drivers (15 to 20 years old) who were killed in crashes had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .01 grams per deciliter (g/dL) or higher; 26 percent had a BAC of .08 or higher.
Drivers are considered to be alcohol-impaired when their BAC is .08 g/dL or higher. Thus, any fatality occurring in a crash involving a driver with a BAC of .08 or higher is considered to be an alcohol-impaired-driving fatality.
The severity of a crash increases with alcohol involvement. In 2007, 3 percent of the 15- to 20-year-old drivers involved in property-damage-only crashes had been drinking, 4 percent of those involved in crashes resulting in injury had been drinking, and 23 percent of those involved in fatal crashes had been drinking.
I do what I do as I deeply care about today's youth! I work with them in their schools, youth conferences, training and leadership seminars... and through my work with them, I teach them to "Take Time To Think". When speaking- use my slogan, to it's fullest- tell them to THINK- BUY THEM one of my bracelets (or one for yourself) as a reminder to them. ( Read the amazing testimonial from a HS Student, who looked at his bracelet and took time to think)! Lets make sure we get the message across- fun happens without the need for Alcohol and Drugs!

A Testimonial I'd Like to Share The "Jeff Yalden Experience"
I
am the director of a non profit youth center and run the Drug Free
Communities Grant for Poweshiek, Iowa. We just finished three days with
Jeff Yalden and I can not even begin to tell you what a wonderful
experience it was!
He is incredibly energetic and really connects with the youth and the
adults in a community! We had him in three towns, six schools and an
evening with parents. I was inspired to see that after each assembly
youth were so anxious to come and talk with him one on one and to
relate personal experiences, traumas and achievements with him. I
watched in awe as adults and youth alike both laughed and cried during
his presentations. I think the one aspect that sets Jeff apart from
other speakers is that this isn't just a job for him, it's his life.
I can not emphasize enough what a great experience this was for our
whole community. We only utilized his services for 6-12 graders, but I
am confident he can relate to the lower levels as well. If you can get
him for the upper classman, I would encourage you to do so, they really
respond well to him.
Please let me know if I can share any other details with you or if you
would like to hear from any of our teachers, principals, community
members or youth.
