"I finally have time in my life to direct my energy into something that really matters."

"I joined Pilgrim Coalition in February 2012. I am new to the area but not new to the problems that are presented from nuclear power facilities. I was born and raised in the Hudson Valley of New York State and was very much aware of dangers posed from the Indian Point plant. I owned two stores in New York and after 25 years of retail, I decided to sell my business and retire. I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do with my life so I travelled for a while and revisited the dream of living on Cape Cod. My husband and I have been vacationing on the Cape and Islands for over 40 years and knew someday we would live here. So we sold our home and properties in New York and moved here in September of 2010. Shortly after I settled into my new environment, I learned of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station and all its dangers. The more I learned, the more I got fired up and my earlier days of activism blossomed once again. South Eastern Coastal Massachusetts and Cape Cod Bay are among the most beautiful places in the world. We must make sure the area is protected for generations to come. Pilgrim Coalition is a wonderful organization with dedicated people who I am honored to be working with. We get our energy from each other and it fuels our drive to fight for our environment, public health and public safety."

State Needs to Go Back to Work on Cape Cod Emergency Evacuation Plan
Spokesman: "Legitimate Question," Back to Work on Plan
Bourne Bridge, Cape Cod The state has updated its emergency traffic plan for Cape Cod drivers, but not enough to satisfy many of us concerned about a possible accident at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station.

Pilgrim Coalition member organizations, concerned Cape Cod residents and safety officials recently asked the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) to revise its plan for responding to an accident at the Plymouth nuclear reactor. MEMA met with the group in June and released its updated plan in late July, according to the Cape Cod TimesIf an accident were to happen, the group wants to make sure Cape Cod residents can safely exit on the Sagamore and Bourne bridges, particularly the Sagamore. State officials have denied that the bridge would be automatically closed and said there would be no formal evacuation of Cape Cod.

The updated MEMA plan effectively only addresses planning for hurricanes and state officials say they are working on a plan specific to traffic leaving the Cape in case of an accident at Pilgrim, a MEMA spokesman told the Cape Cod Times

"We're a population at risk but we've been basically ignored," said Diane Turco of Cape Downwinders.
