FIRST ICSI FOAL ARRIVES AT JEHERS
North Texas Facility Is Making
The Process A Reality

JEH Equine Reproduction Specialists welcomed their first foal, conceived by Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), into the world at their facility near Whitesboro, Texas last week.

Dr. Kurt Harris and Dr. Chelsea Makloski of the North Texas clinic have spent the last year aspirating 1-to-2 times per week to perfect the ICSI technique and the media recipes and timing needed for this reproduction process.

"Aspiration sessions usually involve 3-to-5 hours, laboratory time about 7-to-14 hours per week on equine oocytes, depe

nding on how many mares we are doing," Dr. Makloski said this week. "We have accomplished a lot in the past year and trying to offer the best quality ICSI service in the country."

Using the ICSI process, oocytes are aspirated from the mares and then matured in special media inside the JEHERS laboratory, which is a controlled environment that artificially simulates a mare's environment. After the oocytes are matured, Dr. Makloski or Dr. Harris injects a single sperm cell into the oocyte and then places it into another type of media to grow. The JEHERS staff will monitor for fertilization and embryo growth for 6-to-7 days. At that point if the embryo is viable, it is non-surgically transferred into a recipient mare.

KOBE USES LAST JUMP TO UPSET DENIRO'S GRADE 1 DERBY BID
Deniro by JEH Stallion DESIRIO

Kobe won it in the last second, but not with a last second jump shot or driving lay-up. This Kobe, a colt who is named after the superstar basketball player Kobe Bryant, won the Grade 1 $200,000 Los Alamitos Winter Derby by sticking his nose in front of the finish line first and in the last possible moment of a thrilling 400 yard duel with even money favorite Deniro, by on Saturday at Los Alamitos.

Owned and bred by Mark and Mary Parsons, Kobe showed all the determination in the world, as the 3-year-old California-bred appeared to be out of contention right at the start when he was bumped hard by both Deniro and One Ramblin Lady leaving the gate. Sixth at the break, jockey Cody Jensen and Kobe began to chip away at the leaders with each stride once he regained his composure.

To be ridden by Ramon Sanchez for trainer Paul Jones, Jess You And I is also looking to become only the fourth Quarter Horse in history to go over the $2 million mark in earnings. The winner's share of the Winter Championship is $94,941, which would elevate Jess You And I to $1,905,568 in career earnings. The 8-year-old son of FEATURE MR JESS will start from post six. A victory would also make Jess You And I one of the oldest horses in the history of the sport to win a Grade 1 race.

SENOR TOBY BY JEH'S MIGHTY INVICTUS FINISHES SECOND IN WINTER CHAMPIONSHIP GRADE 1 DEBUT

Senor Toby, a progeny of JEH Stallion MIGHTY INVICTUS, placed in Sunday's Los Alamitos Winter Championship.   The race was Senor Toby's Grade 1 debut, and he went into the gate behind a seven win streak which was snapped by the hard running El Aguila Real.   Brad Lohr and Daniel Reynoso's Senor Toby earned $38,429 for finishing second. Senor Toby is trained by Jaime Gomez and ridden by Oscar Peinado.  The 4-year-old sorrel gelding was bred in California form the Sir Alibi mare Micheles Alibi. Senor Toby has earned $103,719 with a 7-1-2 record in 10 career starts.

Owned by Bianca Mendez, El Aguila Real upset one of the best ever Los Alamitos Winter Championship fields to earn himself the first of 10 guaranteed starting berths to the prestigious 2012 Champion of Champions on Sunday night.  Trained by Francisco Vallejo and ridden by Bianca's brother-in-law, Cruz Mendez, El Aguila Real led the Winter Championship from start to finish and easily swooped down into the winner's circle while recording his second Grade 1 victory in just over two months. Bred by 2003 AQHA Champion Owner Enrique Gonzalez of EG High Desert Farm, El Aguila Real had previously won the Grade 1 Southern California Derby on December 18. That victory was only a head decision over Feature My Corona, while this victory was a ¾ length victory over rising star Senor Toby plus the two great AQHA champions Noconi and Jess You And I.

R.D. Hubbard's Noconi earned $27,126 for finishing third. He's now earned $1,305,959. Double Bar S Ranch, LLC's Jess You And I crossed the wire fourth, but was disqualified and placed seventh for bumping with Dash Back Perry. The 8-year-old FEATURE MR JESS gelding made $9,042 for this trip down the straightaway and has now earned $1,819,669 in his brilliant career.  The complete order of finish to the Los Alamitos Winter Championship is as follows: El Aguila Real, Senor Toby, Noconi, Walkin Bac, Feature Honor, Dash Back Perry, Jess You And I , Sparky E Boy, BF Farm Boy and Parsons Rock.
