Bravery and Courage

by Bob Anderson, PhD, CMSgt(Ret)

In my new book Grandfather Speaks, Grandfather speaks on Bravery and Courage. What's the difference you ask?

Honestly, because of conventional thought it may be hard to describe and even harder to grasp; but here goes...

Bravery most often happens during a crisis or a conflict. There is little time to respond, there may be only time to react.

That reaction may be to freeze or may be to run; occasionally it is to take control of the uncontrollable.

Maybe it is to charge headlong through machine gun fire, or throw your body on a grenade to save someone else. Maybe it is to pull someone from a burning wreck or jump in the water to save a drowning friend. Bravery is an act.

Courage on the other hand is a response. It involves the conscious act of placing yourself in circumstances that will call on you to act bravely.

On September 11, 2001 we heard story after story of firemen running toward the Twin Towers while everyone else was running away from them. Many brave deeds were done that day. Many civilians thrust into the moment acted with bravery.

The Fire Fighters and Cops of New York had months and years ago chosen to act courageously knowing that one day they might be called to make the ultimate sacrifice.

It is the same with our armed forces; today our military is an all volunteer force. They voluntarily gave up some of their own security and peace to defend this country.

In the corporate world people voluntarily place themselves in another form of danger. They are willing to do the "hard jobs". That takes courage.

Here's the important part and I'm not going to explain it. If you can't figure it out for yourself I would never be able to teach it.

Even in the smallest unit of society - the family, courage must exist.   You explain that one for me...
