I can't count the number of knife-based multi-tool items that are available now. However, to the best of my knowledge all started with a guy named Tim Leatherman and his partner, a fella named Steve Berliner.
In 1983, they began the multi-tool craze and they have been in the business ever since. Now Gerber, Smith and dozens of others are making compact, easily transportable tools that fit in the pocket (or a pouch) that cover a wide variety of necessary Outlast abilities.
Which is the best? I don't know, I have several and these things are becoming the Swiss Army Knife of preppers, survivalist and soldiers.
I can tell you this, when my brother-in-law drew an assignment in Afghanistan clearing left-over land mines; I sent him a Wave made by Leatherman.
When I went to Iraq, I carried both a Wave and a Gerber Multi-tool. Either will work, both had similar but different on-board accessories.
Check them out and decide for yourself. I consider this item an absolute essential for an Outlast situation. Whether you put one in your pocket, bug-out bag, back pack or glove box; this is an investment that can mean the difference of surviving or not.
They also make great gifts, especially for dads (Father's Day is coming up June 17th).
Prices for the different versions and makers range from about $50 to about $200+. Forget the GDI factor (Guys Dig It), pick something you're willing to bet your life on - then buy at least one and I personally suggest several.
