EXHIBITIONS
Opening February 25
Agnes Martin:  Before the Grid
and
Agnes Martin:  Works on Paper

Little attention has been paid to internationally acclaimed artist Agnes Martin's aesthetic roots. Agnes Martin: Before the Grid is designed to fill this historical art gap. The exhibition, along with a series of lectures, films and a symposium, pays tribute to this remarkable artist while celebrating the 100th anniversary of her birth. The 30 paintings and drawings in the exhibition, many of which have never been exhibited before, were culled by curators Tiffany Bell and Jina Brenneman from private and public collections. These pieces, dating from the early 1940s through the 1950s, comprise a little-known body of work demonstrating Martin's evolution from portraits, still-lifes and landscapes to the biomorphic and geometric abstractions preceding the grid paintings for which she is internationally recognized.   Go to this special section on the Harwood's web site for complete information about the exhibitions and related programs.

Agnes Martin: Before the Grid Catalogue A 70-page color catalogue featuring an art historical essay by Dr. Richard Tobin accompanies the exhibition. The catalogue includes introductory text by Arne Glimcher of The Pace Gallery and artist and friend of Martin, Richard Tuttle. Info: 575-758-9826 (x102) or send an e-mail to shop@harwoodmuseum.org. Cost: $36 Alliance members, $40 nonmembers.

Thursdays, Feb. 2, 9, 16, 23, 7 p.m.         SOMOS Winter Writers Series at the Harwood

Taos has long been a haven for the creative soul. Since the arrival of literary notables Willa Cather and D.H. Lawrence in the early twentieth century, literature has played a prominent role in the area's rich cultural landscape. As literary arts flourished, the need for formal community support became apparent, which led to the Society of the Muse of the Southwest (SOMOS).  The February schedule at the Harwood is:

February 2 SOMOS presents Young Writers Night, hosted by poet Rita O'Connell.  Students from Chrysalis, Vista Grande, Taos High and Taos Academy will read their poems and short works of prose.
February 9 Up and Coming Writers: John Biscello, fiction; Jean-Marie Saporito, short story; Hannah Rappaport, memoir; Karen Baldwin, memoir; and Ned Dougherty, poetry.
February 16 SOMOS presents William DeBuys, whose seven books include the recent, A Great Aridness: Climate Change and the Future of the American West.
February 23  SOMOS presents Phaedra Greenwood reading selections on the theme of Women and Nature; Anita Rodriguez will read from her soon-to-be published cookbook - on the theme of Women and Culture.

Tickets $6 Harwood Alliance Members & SOMOS Members; $8 Non-Members.

Staff Spotlight

Whatever they do at the Harwood Museum of Art, our staff shares a passion for the museum, for the collection and for you, our members and visitors, through their work.  This new column is an opportunity to acknowledge the dedication and exemplary performance of staff members who deserve special recognition.

This month we'd like to recognize and celebrate the achievements and contributions Betsy Bowen has made to the successful operation of the museum. Betsy is the Curatorial Assistant at the Harwood Museum of Art.

"Betsy Bowen brings professionalism, expertise and extreme care to the Curatorial Department at the Harwood Museum," says Jina Brenneman, Curator of Collections and Exhibitions. "At the same time, her sense of humor and patience is the glue that holds this department together. Betsy has been instrumental in the evolvement of the Agnes Martin centennial exhibitions opening this month. She has coordinated all of the logistics, worked closely with lenders, collaborated with the creation of the invitation, gallery guide and catalog. Betsy's input into the curatorial melting pot of ideas is invaluable."

Since 1981 Betsy Bowen has committed her life to nonprofit arts organizations. She holds an MA in sculpture from Temple University. She worked as a curator, registrar, and manager at "Grounds for Sculpture" in Hamilton, NJ, one of the leading sculpture parks and foundries in the nation. She was actively involved in installations, development and organizing major exhibitions there. Betsy taught sculpture at Philadelphia School of Art.  In her earliest professional career, she served as assistant to the academic director at the Johnson Atelier.

Betsy and lifetime friend and husband, sculptor Petro Hul, live in Arroyo Hondo with two handsome cats.

As Valentine's Day approaches, we'd like to recognize the many women who make the Harwood Museum of Art such an important and beloved museum. Those women include Agnes Martin, who is celebrated in our upcoming exhibitions Agnes Martin: Before the Grid and Agnes Martin:  Works on Paper. See the special section on the museum's website for information about these landmark exhibitions and related programs.  The Town of Taos has recognized Agnes as a legend in their Remarkable Women of Taos celebration, which kicks off at the Harwood on March 22 - the centennial of Agnes Martin's birth.

We're also thrilled that the Town of Taos has recognized as remarkable women two of our key staff members, Jina Brenneman and Lucy Perera. Both women contribute to making the Harwood Museum of Art a cultural touchstone for many in northern New Mexico.  Another remarkable woman is Curatorial Assistant Betsy Bowen, featured in our staff spotlight column.

Finally, we understand the pressure of finding just the right gift for your special someone - especially on Valentine's Day! This Saturday, February 4 we host the February Shop & Learn Trunk Show with work by Arroyo Hondo artist Gretchen Ewert. You can find great gifts for your loved one amongst her hand-designed paper and ceramic work.   And join us Saturday, February 11, for the Valentine's Day Workshop in the Fern Hogue Mitchell Education Center, where you can create beautiful handmade valentines for your friends and family.

Happy Valentine's Day,
