| Shalom! | |
The photo above is by John Hart of the Wisconsin State Journal, who spotted our students doing yoga in Wingra Park with MJCDS mom and yoga educator Trista Warrich.
Trista says that this week, "not only did all the children seem to know some yoga poses, they were very good observers of breath in nature, and all came up with unique observations. Our mantra this week was 'breathe!' and we did a version of the sun salute while we grew like plants."
As we head into Shabbat and then into our New Year, I am so grateful to be a part of the MJCDS community, where curiosity, confidence and kindness bloom in each of our students and are valued so highly by our families and our community.
May this year be filled with growth and learning, health and sweetness for each of you.
Shabbat Shalom and Shanah Tovah!
Rabbi Rebecca

| Mystery Sentence Theater! (Third Grade) |
Sentence Theater? Sentence Theater. Sentence Theater! Using spelling words, third graders created various types of sentences: statements, commands, exclamations and questions.
To present their sentences, the children morphed into different characters and popped through specific theater curtains that corresponded with their sentence types.
Audience members responded with the same type of sentence. For example: Actor: GO TO YOUR ROOM! (command) Audience: WASH THE TABLE! (also a command).
At the right, Rory presents a question to the audience!

| Rosh Hashanah Learning | What Lessons do Apples and Honey offer for Education? In the Jewish schoolrooms of Europe, when new students opened their alphabet primers for the first time, teachers would place drops of honey on each of the letters. The goal, of course, was for each student to always associate learning with sweetness. The editor of the Mishnah, Rabbi Yehuda haNasi taught, "Only the lesson which is enjoyed can be learned well." Enjoying one's learning can take many forms. On the first day of school, that could mean tasting honey in your alphabet book. On another day, it could be learning through play. It can mean learning in an environment that respects and nurtures each child's individuality and creativity. It also can mean the enjoyment and satisfaction of working hard at a skill or subject that is challenging for us. And the delight experienced when encountering a new idea or asking a good question. Read more from Rabbi Ben-Gideon's article on Rosh Hashanah in the Madison Jewish News here. Rosh Hashanah Ideas for Families Everything you ever wanted to know about the Jewish New Year, from apples and honey to tashlich to the shofar can be found on the website kveller, which offers a Jewish twist on parenting topics. |

Shofar in the Park
Monday, September 17 at 5:00 pm
Upper Shelter in Garner Park
We´ve been blowing the Shofar, a simple hollowed out ram's horn, for thousands of years in celebration of Rosh Hashana, or the Head of the Year - also known as the birthday of humanity. Hear the stirring, unadulterated blasts of the Shofar as we reflect on our collective birthday. And walk away with a message that you were carrying all along. For more info contact Dara Kobylarz, darabk77@gmail.com or see Shofarinthepark.eventbrite.com.
