| Shalom! | |
I just came from a shocking (in a good way) scene in the K-1 room! It is traditional to blow shofar in the morning during the month of Elul to remind ourselves that Rosh Hashanah is coming, and one of our first-graders had brought in her family's shofar to show her class.
I asked her if I could use it to practice, hoping to demonstrate a tekiyah blast for the students. Instead, she put it to her lips and blew-and out came a series of solid blasts that sounded as though she had been at it for years.
Her classmates (and teachers) were amazed and captivated. We talked about how the shofar helps us to know what time it is: it's time to celebrate the birthday of the world. We talked about how we feel when we hear the shofar: wonderful, tingly, etc.
As we approach Rosh Hashanah, let's wish one another a Shanah Metukah, a sweet year full of good surprises and lots of learning.
Shabbat Shalom!
Rabbi Rebecca

| Autobiography: Grades 4 and 5 |
When you think back on the most significant events of your childhood, what do you recall?
Fourth and fifth graders recently thought of family vacations, pets, holidays, funny stories, and much more. Students used their own memories and stories from family members to create timelines of their lives that they couldn't wait to share with each other!
The timelines helped students organize their thoughts as they began writing autobiographies filled with stories about these important events in their lives. As students complete these autobiographies, they will be working on each of the steps in the writing process: pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Students will "publish" their stories in their very own hard cover books, in which they will have the opportunity to add photographs and/or illustrations.

Shofar in the Park
Monday, September 17 at 5:00 pm
Upper Shelter in Garner Park
We´ve been blowing the Shofar, a simple hollowed out ram's horn, for thousands of years in celebration of Rosh Hashana, or the Head of the Year - also known as the birthday of humanity. Hear the stirring, unadulterated blasts of the Shofar as we reflect on our collective birthday. And walk away with a message that you were carrying all along. For more info contact Dara Kobylarz, darabk77@gmail.com or see Shofarinthepark.eventbrite.com.
