| Shalom! | |
This past week, students danced at Sharsheret, third and fourth grade students visited Old World Wisconsin (thanks Felice and Alice for transporting and chaperoning!), and K-2 students had a camping-themed day.
Toward the end of the week, parents and grandparents joined students for intergenerational learning. Thanks to all our family members, special friends, and Cantor Debbie Martin for joining us in the classroom and in the park!
Special thanks as well to Kathy Mazur, who has been working with the third and fourth graders all year long on the Jewish Lens, photography centered on Jewish identity The full exhibit takes place this Thursday night, SMART night. (5:30-7) Hope you can join us!
Kathy also created with the students a Shavuot-themed sculpture, which is described in the article below and which will go on display this Saturday night along with a selection of photographs at the community Tikkun Leil Shavuot. It's so appropriate that our students' work will be exhibited on an evening dedicated to celebrating (and doing) Jewish learning!
Todah Rabbah to Kathy, to Temple Beth El for allowing us to use its ritual objects in the photographs, and to the staff of Beth Israel Center for its help in hosting this exhibit.
Shabbat Shalom and Hag Sameah!

| Shavuot Photos and Sculpture Exhibit |
Third and fourth grade students have been working with Kathy Mazur all year long on the Jewish Lens, a curriculum that encourages them to explore Jewish identity through photography. Some of their photos will be exhibited this Saturday evening at Beth Israel Center, at the community-wide Tikkun Leil Shavuot.
(Sat. May 26, 7:30 pm, Beth Israel Center).
Students of all grades created a sculpture that will also be displayed Saturday evening.
Here, Kathy explains the process of creating the sculpture and its meaning:
"Reaching Towards Truth," a sculpture created by the students from MJCDS, represents the Jewish people's dedication to the study of Torah and to Tikkun Olam.
Each student was given a specific art project to help create this sculpture. Beginning with the youngest learners, those in kindergarten and first grade were challenged to create vivid, cray-pas designs reflecting their favorite parsha, Hebrew word or image that reminds them of Judaism. It is the base of the sculpture that represents this art piece. Look for "Noah's Ark", "Lila", "Kippot", "Star of David" and "People."
The second and third grade students were assigned to paint the "reaching arms." Each student in this group was given a specific art genre to reflect historical changes in culture. I provided for each of these students a brief description and example of the assigned art genre to follow. The "reaching arms" beautifully illustrate these art periods: abstract expressionism, art deco, art nouveau and modern contemporary.
Our fourth grade students designed the 5 Books of Moses. Focussing on the main theme of each book, these students were asked to create an image that reflects this theme and Hebrew title. These insightful images are: "The Tree of Life", "Candles", "Sh'ma, Emet", "Clouds & Fire", " Moses & The Ten Commandments."
At first glance, one could view this three-dimensional art piece as Mount Sinai: the base representing the Israelites; the "reaching arms and balancing books" shaping the mountain. A closer look will reveal the relationships of the Jewish People to each book and how such relationships shape Jewish lives.
We begin with a solid foundation from Genesis and Deuteronomy, upon which Jews are created and given one "truth", the Sh'ma. From this foundation, is the journey through the wilderness, as the Jewish people are guided by God's presence. The Book of Leviticus is delicately balanced between two art histories: abstract expressionism & art deco with help from Genesis. This precarious angle reminds us of the effort Jews must make to bring holiness into their lives. Reaching high in the air is Exodus and The Ten Commandments.
