Shalom!

This past week, our first and second grade students created "movies" based on books they have been reading.  The kindergarteners were so envious they began a similar project! (More about this below.)

Third and fourth graders expanded their understanding of immigration in several ways. On Monday, Jewish Social Services came to MJCDS along with Clara, a Jewish high school student from Brazil, to speak with our students.

On Thursday, the students visited Jefferson Middle School, where they received a school tour and heard the immigration story of Maria Covarrubias, a teacher whose immigration story is featured in one of our Wisconsin history text books.  Many thanks to Janice Beers and JSS, Clara, Maria Covarrubias, and Joe Bins and his students!

The photo above was taken by Lena Ben-Gideon as part of the Jewish Lens photography project.  See more on upcoming exhibits below!

Shabbat Shalom!

Lights . . . Camera . . . Action

The 1st and 2nd graders have been turning their chapter books into a cinematic production!

Take 1

The children selected their own chapter book to read. To check for comprehension, they wrote down the main idea for each chapter and a prediction for the following chapter on a clapboard. Instead of "Chapter One" - they wrote "Take One"). To further demonstrate their comprehension, the main ideas for each chapter (who, what, where, when) were illustrated on a movie reel (cash register tape). This was placed in a shoebox and the students reeled their way through each chapter. (See photo at right)

Take 2

Next, the children wrote an eight sentence persuasive "movie review" on their book. Their review stated whether or not they recommended the book, three specific reasons why with supporting details, and a concluding statement.

Take 3

After that, the children brought in five props for the movie. They wrote down what each prop was and why it was important for the movie.

Take 4

Next week, each student will dress as a character from the book and present their clapboards, movie and props.

SHAVUOT ART EXHIBIT

The MJCDS students in the third and fourth grades will be exhibiting their photos this Shavuot at the community-wide Tikkun Leil Shavuot (Sat. May 26, 7:30 pm, Beth Israel Center).

This year, these students have had the opportunity to explore their Jewish identity through photography using the Jewish Lens program.  For the Shavuot exhibit, the students focused on community, study, Torah, ritual, music & the Hebrew word "emet," meaning truth, which also serves as the theme of this year's Tikkun.

We will have a complete showing of all the photographs during the upcoming SMART night, May 31.

Also for our Shavuot program, be sure and check out the MJCDS art sculpture,

"Reaching Towards Truth".

First Fruits, Counting our Blessings
We are on Week Number 5 plus in counting from the second day of Pesach to Shavuot. During this time, each day students have been writing "a first fruit" offering. Kindergarten students focused on items they are thankful for, items they like, or how they have helped!  Here are samples from the kindergarten class:

Sara wrote: I am thankful for my sisters!

Noam wrote: I helped my Ema make dinner!

Haya wrote: I am thankful for the omer!

Shiloh wrote: I like Shabbat.

The 1st through 4th grade students learned about the various weeks according to different sephirot or Kabbalistic emanations in which HaShem reveals himself. So far they have written about kindness, justice, harmony, endurance, humility, and bonding. They will finish by writing about kingship.

From the 1/2 class:

Lila wrote: I am bonded to school, but not homework!

Jane wrote: I show humility when I pray.

Jonathan wrote: I gave compassion: I gave "X" all my points!

Jojo wrote: I work for harmony with my classmates.

3/4 students are also working on this. They have been writing their sentences in Hebrew!
