| Shalom! | |
Every week, there's so much going on at MJCDS that it's hard to fit it all into this newsletter. But we're up for the challenge!
This week for instance, students and families gathered for Science Night and students presented their experiments to friends and family. They celebrated Lag B'Omer and had a special Field Day gym class at Wingra Park (thanks to Gary, YMCA West, and the amazing weather we had that day). They built a family tree that reached all the way to the ceiling, explored immigration and heard the first-person immigration story of one of our parents, and practiced their dance for the upcoming Sharsheret Festival.
Thankfully, Shabbat is almost here, giving us a chance to get refreshed for more great learning next week.
Shabbat Shalom!

Lag B'Omer and Community
|
Thursday morning, bright and early the 3/4 class practiced the song that Maya shared with them that they will be performing at the Sharsharet Festival in a few weeks.
While they were strengthening their vocal chops, the K students joined them to learn the 'Pizmon,' the refrain - that there should be peace for all of Israel.
The olders then helped the "youngers!" Together they took a hike and found sticks that could readily be transformed into bows. And of course, they found arrows, for what would a Lag B'Omer celebration be without bows and arrows?
The 1/2 class helped the K students do some studying as well. They heard many stories. Some in Hebrew. Some in English. Many of the Hebrew stories, the 1/2 class read aloud for the K students. These stories were then turned into an art project! Through, writing, drama, and song they used the lessons and learned to celebrate the day.
But that is not all! Thanks to Garry from YMCA, all together they played hard at Wingra Park as they enjoyed their very special FIELD DAY!

| We Are Family! |
We are family,
I got all my sisters with me!
We are family
Get up everybody and sing!
Kindergarten certainly had a lot to sing about recently! As part of our social studies "Family" unit, we spent a day role-playing a family. From a barely audible 2-year-old to a 19-year-old responsible teenager, the children thoroughly enjoyed acting out various experiences as a family. The highlight of the day was when the children received their driver's license! They took a vision test and passed when they read "ug" and "at" words, with "aying" words as a bonus. Next, they wrote what red, yellow and green represent on a light. They filled out a driver's license that included information for full name, hair color, eye color, age, and male or female. To top it off, they received a key and key chain. It took no time at all for them to say goodbye and zip away up and down the hallway in their chair cars!
We are currently creating a huge, three-dimensional family tree hanging from the ceiling to our work table. The children wrote 3 sentences about each parent, and illustrated this and other aspects of our tree, including what qualities make our family/garden/tree grow strong!
