MJCDS Maggid/Teller

the weekly newsletter of

 Madison Jewish Community Day School

Shalom!

MJCDS students write a lot of letters--in Hebrew and English--to relatives and community members.

I received a note this week from a parent that was so sweet I wanted to share it with you.

"My parents received a letter from Nikolai (a MJCDS third-grader) at their Florida condo address.  The letter was in Hebrew, so they took it their neighbor who is a 95-year-old Holocaust survivor and he read the letter and was impressed by the Hebrew and the writing it contained.  Nikko might tell you about it--he was pretty excited!"

Especially this week as we commemorate Yom HaShoah, it's wonderful to see the joy that's spread as students build their Hebrew skills and share their learning with others.

Read on for one more uplifting Hebrew story below.

I hope to see many of you this weekend at the Spring Gala!

Shabbat Shalom,

-Rebecca Ben-Gideon

Kindergartener Wins a National Hebrew Poetry Award
Madison Jewish Community Day School has a winner! Of course, we have many, many winners and many, many great learners. Yet, specifically for the RAVSAK (The Jewish Community Day School Network) Second Annual Poetry Contest, MJCDS produced a first-rate, first place winner. Last year there were more than 500 submissions from 28 schools.

This year the theme was Biblical Characters from the Tanakh. Six winners were selected: one native and one non-native Hebrew speaker in elementary school, middle school, and high school.

MJCDS kindergartener Noam Ben-Gideon won first-place for non-native elementary school submissions. Noam's poem about Rebecca/Rivka is below.  Yashar Koach and Mazal Tov, Noam!

About the Festival:  The Sharsheret Dance Festival is an exciting event for all ages.  The festival showcases talented youth dance groups, this year there will be Israeli dancers (from Madison and Chicago), a Chinese dance group and an Indian dance group.  The event will feature dancers from preschool-high school, and even a 'surprise' appearance from some parent dancers.  The Sunday Festival is the culmination of the Sharsheret Dance Camp, a weekend long camp for 5th graders- 12 graders who have spent an intense weekend learning new dances from a guest choreographer from out of state.  Before the Festival you can browse through an art gallery featuring pieces created by students from the local Jewish community.
