Shalom!

Our Hebrew word of the week:  Gesher.  Gesher means bridge, and our first and second graders have been engineering quite a few of them, as you will read below.

After having experimented and built bridges, today students learned and then sang a Jewish teaching that compares our world to a bridge.  Rabbi Nachman of Bratzlav taught:  The whole world is like a narrow bridge--the key is not to be afraid!

Kindergarteners have also been building, creating a model of a community using recycled cartons and boxes. Elements so far include: firehouse, house, fire truck, orphanage, MJCDS, car, lake, stop sign, tree, restaurant.

Don't forget to join us Sunday evening at the Ben-Gideon home for a fun evening of wine tasting.  Get ready for your seder by purchasing a few bottles--a portion of sales benefits MJCDS!  Or, just come for an enjoyable evening trying new wines and catching up with friends.

Shabbat Shalom!

Engineering is Elementary:  Bridge Building
First and second grade students are learning how to be civil engineers! They have spent the last few weeks learning all about bridges as part of a curriculum unit called Engineering is Elementary.

Students listened to a story about Javier, a boy who needed to build a safer bridge leading to his tree house so that his little sister would not fall off again. As Javier learned about bridge design from his stepfather and famous types of bridges from his out-of-town cousins, the students learned as well!

The students then had the opportunity to learn about and test the strength and stability of various types of bridges including beam, deep beam, arch, and suspension.

This all led up to a final project, in which students had to use The Engineering Design Process (Ask, Imagine, Design, Create, and Improve) to build and test prototypes of their own bridge designs. Students loved working with their hands, and I loved listening to their thought-provoking conversations throughout the process about how to make their designs even better!

A special thank you to Naomi Chesler for finding and making possible this exciting engineering curriculum for our students!

Pop Up Learning!
Pop Up Pony Express
We've been popping with pop-ups!  This week, the 1/2 class combined the history of communications with expository writing (writing to explain) in an exciting venture . . . Pop up books!

The illustrated pages contain paragraphs about the pony express, telegraph/morse code, and the phone.  Furthermore, each piece of writing begins with a "lead" question to interest the readers.

It's truly amazing to see how the same assignment varies from child to child in terms of writing style and illustrations.  Like Dr. Seuss wrote, "Oh the thinks you can think of, if only you try."
