| Third and Fourth Graders Explore Wisconsin Pioneer Life |
Can you imagine what it would have been like to live in Wisconsin 150 years ago? The 3rd and 4th graders are learning all about it through an integrated reading and social studies unit on Pioneer life in our state. Half of the students are reading Little House in the Big Woods, Laura Ingalls' famous story of her childhood in Western Wisconsin. The rest of the class is reading Caddie Woodlawn, another story about a young girl in Wisconsin, written by her granddaughter. Students created "log cabins," and decorated the interior with all of the essential items used by pioneers, such as a woodstove, trundle bed, tub and washboard, a place to churn butter, and much more! On March 12th, the 3rd/4th grade class will be going to Aldo Leopold Nature Center for two programs. One of them, entitled "Pioneer Life," will give the kids a chance to spend time inside a real log cabin, try out some of the common Pioneer chores like churning butter and carrying water buckets with a yolk, and even learn some games played by Pioneer children! The other part of our time there will be spent in the forest, learning about how people throughout time in Wisconsin have used the sap from trees to make Maple syrup. Yum!

| K-2 Language Arts Update |
Today, students at MJCDS participated in Read Across America Day celebrating Dr. Seuss. Our love of reading was fueled as we enjoyed poems, biographies about Dr. Seuss, books by Dr. Seuss, selected children's books, and writing about Dr. Seuss. Thank you to all of our guest readers!
Kindergarten
Kindergarten students are reading and writing more and more! After completing their feelings books, students focused on reading leveled books and classroom magazines. They then learned about Dr. Seuss in preparation for Read Across America. In conjunction with Purim, they will be thinking about opposites next week!
First and Second Grades
The first and second graders began reading The Mystery on the Great Lakes by Carole Marsh. They are so excited that the suspense from day to day has them jumping out of their skin. Students are focusing on the characters, setting, and events in the plot as they read each chapter. In this novel, students go on a trip with a family around the Great Lakes. This connects to the class's social studies work in geography and history of communications.
