The first and second grade classes recently decided to study the solar system. They chose this topic from a few options, and then began their learning with enthusiasm.
They are learning about the parts of the solar system, the sun, planets, moons, comets, meteoroids, and asteroids.
Students for generations have used mnemonic devices to help remember the planets and their order. You may remember a phrase such as, "My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas" that helped you remember Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
But now that Pluto is no longer considered a planet, our students got creative and came up with their own phrases to help them remember the planets and their positions in the solar system. Here they are:
My Very Excellent Mom Just Saved Unusual Necklaces (Josephine)
Many Violent Elephants March Joyfully South Until Nightfall (Lila)
Mother Vampires Eat Many Jellybeans Softly Until Night (Jane)
Meir's Very Excellent Mommy Jumps Seriously Until Nine (Jonathan)
