| Literature Circles |
Third and fourth grade students have been doing an amazing job discussing their current reading material in "Literature Circles."
Each student is assigned a role such as the Discussion Director, who writes questions about the assigned chapter to discuss with the group. The Word Wizard gathers information on difficult or important vocabulary, and the Summarizer helps the group remember key plot points. Students rotate through the various roles each session, so that they all have a turn to try them out. It's wonderful to be able to listen in on these sophisticated and insightful student-led conversations!
The students are currently discussing The Heart of a Chief, by Joseph Bruchac. This is a story about a young boy living on a Penacook reservation today and attending a public middle school for the first time. Some of the students' most interesting discussions have centered on the main characters' conflicting feelings of pride in carrying on the traditions of his tribe and his desire to fit in at school. The students immediately voiced a connection with this character as they pondered the similar transition they will make in just a few years. I can't wait to hear more during their next literature circle!

| Kindergarteners, Kindergarteners, What Do You See? |
After reading the popular children's book, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Eric Carle, the kindergarten class wrote and illustrated their own version of this classic. This gave students a chance to creatively use color words, which they are working on adding to their sight vocabulary. This project also required them to sequence the words in sentences and the events in the story.
On each page of the book, a single-colored animal is asked the question, "What do you see?" Kindergarteners proudly read their own class book! They, of course, continue to enjoy many more books by the popular children's authors and illustrators, Bill Martin, Jr. and Eric Carle.

Join us this Sunday at the annual Hanukkah Tzedakah Night event, Dec. 11, 3:30-5:30 pm at the Goodman Jewish Community Campus in Verona.
This community-wide event produced by the Jewish Federation of Madison will feature a singalong led by Music Together teacher Aaron Johnson and performances by Yonim Israeli dancers, as well as students from Gan HaYeled, Chug Ivrit and the Madison Jewish Community Day School.
Following the performances, Hannukah and/or tzedakah activities organized by groups from around the Jewish community will begin.

Please bring gently used books (there is a special need for board books if you have them), and sign up to staff the booth by contacting Rabbi Ben-Gideon.
