 Madison Jewish  Community Day School

Shalom!

This week, younger children visited the library and smashed 'idols' like Abraham (see picture below).  Students in all grades learned with Madison's Community Shlichah, Maya Pney-Gil (having a laugh with Amelia above). Todah Rabbah to Maya and to the Jewish Federation of Madison for making this learning possible.

MJCDS adult community members also engaged in learning this week at a lecture by education expert Alfie Kohn and at the annual Madison Jewish Community Teachers' Convention.  Kol HaKavod (kudos) to all our participants for modeling the idea that learning is both fun and essential at every age!

Shabbat Shalom!

Parashat HaShavuah:  Studying the Torah Portion of the Week
Having finished the fall holidays and our first visits with friends from Edgewood School and Madinah Academy, MJCDS students have finally been able to dig into studies of the weekly Torah portion with gusto!

Kindergarten students love singing the B'reshit, Shmot, Vayikra, song with the refrain for Deuteronomy as " do it again!" They also enjoy hearing the portion and then writing about it, as well as illustrating their comments.

Our first and second grade students are very engaged with Tal Am "Big Books," whose beautiful pictures add depth as well as historical perspective to the telling of each

Torah portion. Each book has a special section for teachers to read aloud in Hebrew that strengthens students' listening skills as well as their Hebrew comprehension skills.

Third and fourth grade students love being able to write in their own parshiot books, which tell the story of each Torah portion in graphic form using both words and pictures.   Students work together to read and understand each portion, and then strengthen their writing and reinforce understanding using their workbooks.  We are grateful to the Jewish Federation of Madison for a grant that enables us to use these engaging and excellent Jewish study materials.

Having covered creation, Noah, and Avraham's departure for Canaan, students will soon be in full discussion of the upcoming Torah portion which deals with kindness and consideration.  These traits we hope to hone as our students go about their regular days.

Wisconsin Landscapes
Students in Ms. Goldman's 3/4 class are so creative!   As part of their study of Wisconsin, they recently explored the geography of our state and the features of its various regions. Students came up with the idea of modeling regional features and city locations using clay and figurines.  Below are some of the wonderful results that illustrate the varied landscapes found throughout the state.

Hebrew word of the day:  Zman = Time.  On Hanukkah, we'll bless the candles and recall the miracles that happened long ago and ba'zman hazeh, in our time.  When we are on time to school, we arrive ba'zman.  When we arrive late, we lose zman for learning. Let's challenge ourselves to arrive ba'zman every day! B'Hatzlacha (good luck)!
