Third and Fourth Grades:  Personal Narratives
Writing

During the past couple of weeks, students in the 3rd/4th grade class read examples of both fiction and non-fiction first person narratives. Then students wrote true personal narratives about special places they have visited in the past. I have included a couple of samples of students' work below. In our next Language Arts unit, we will be reading and writing biographies about famous people from Wisconsin.

Enjoy!  -Ms. Goldman

Fun with Family

By Lena

"Oh no, we're going to crash!" I said as I closed my bulging eyes. But our plane landed with a big, huge screech! Wow! The small airport looked so strange and so cool! The big flag was waving in the cool breeze. Then we got our gigantic bags and went to a wonderful resort in a tiny brown car.

"What smells so good?" Vered asked the next morning.

"Breakfast," I said.

"Yummy," we said together.

When Ima and Abba got up, we got dressed quickly, and we chose where to go for breakfast. That was hard! We ate fruit, eggs, pancakes, and more.

Soon we were in our bathing suits and ready to go to the pool on that hot, hot, hot, hot day. First, Vered, Noam, and I went on the slow lazy river. The cold water surrounding us was so relaxing. Then Bubbe, Vered, and I went on the white water slides. One day I got to eat ice cream at the ice cream bar while I was swimming. The stools were right in the water, literally! I ordered two scoops of cookie dough ice cream. That was the best day ever! It made leaving so difficult!

A Perfect Day

By Anna

As we arrived to the carnival, I knew it would be a great day! When I got to the fair, I ran to a towering booth with a red and white target in the middle. There were squirt guns on the table. I squirted, but I missed. I had really wanted a tie-dyed blue and white bear with a pink bow on the neck. I was sad, so my dad tried. He squirted, and he won! I love my blue bear.

"Who wants cotton candy?" my dad called. I love how soft and sweet it is!

Next was the rollercoaster! My heart skipped as our car careened down the hill. Then the world spun and went blurry. As we were about to hit another ride, our car did a sharp turn.

After that, my mom and I went on the Ferris wheel. We stopped at the top where we watched the sun go down. It was a breathtaking sight! What a perfect day!

Kindergarten Language Arts: Pictures, Letters, Words!

Wow, is the kindergarten jumping!  Our MJCDS kindergarten students have been making jumps in their knowledge of letters and words!

They are working with uppercase and lowercase letters.  Students are playing games during which they identify the beginning sounds of words which name pictures.  More and more words are being added to our word wall.  Many of these words are sight words, while some are able to be sounded out. Students are not only able to recognize these words, but also to differentiate them one from the other.  Playing with magnetic letters, students spell words from the word wall and even some additional words that aren't on the wall yet.  Way to go!

Grades 1 & 2: Idea Treasure Chests

The first and second graders are enjoying poems about school, many of them funny poems.  Author Kenn Nesbitt aspired to write such poetry because poet Jack Prelutsky did.  Students are laughing and devouring poems by both of these authors.  Following Jack Prelutsky's advice to young writers, students began sections in the back of their writing journals to list all of their ideas.  Finding an idea is the first step in writing. First and second graders are trying their hands at writing fiction and nonfiction pieces.  They have treasure stores of great ideas!  -Jodi Harris
