Big Read Author Tim O'Brien Visits the Eastern Shore!

  

Author Tim O'Brien will talk about his book "The Things They Carried" at two public appearances; April 18 at 7 pm at the Avalon Theater in Easton, MD and on April 19 at 7 pm, at Stephen Decatur High School in Berlin, MD.  Both events are free and no tickets are required.  Copies of the book are available at your local library.


"The Things They Carried" is this year's Big Read selection.  The Big Read challenges community members to read, discuss, and celebrate the same book.  O'Brien's visit is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, Eastern Shore Regional Library, Somerset County Library, Worcester County Library, and Worcester County Arts Council. 

 

The Big Read is an initiative designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. For more information about The Big Read please visit www.neabigread.org.

BIG READ Event: The History and Legacy of the Vietnam War 
Dr. Samuel B. Hoff examines the legacy of the Vietnam war for both the American and Vietnamese soldiers, citizens, and governments. Dr. Hoff is George Washington Distinguished Professor of History and Political Science and Law Studies Director at Delaware State University.  In 2004, he traveled to Vietnam as part of a Council for International Educational Exchange delegation, receiving an Exxon-Mobil Faculty Fellowship to do so.  He is a member of the Vietnam Center at Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

BIG READ Film: Platoon 
Chris Taylor is a young, naive American who gives up college and volunteers for combat in Vietnam. Upon arrival, he quickly discovers that his presence is quite nonessential and he is considered insignificant to the other soldiers. As he struggles for survival, he soon realizes that he is fighting two battles, the conflict with the enemy and the conflict between the men within his platoon.

BIG READ Film and Discussion: Regret to Inform with Kelley Rouse 
In this film made over ten years, filmmaker Barbara Sonneborn goes on a pilgrimage to the Vietnamese countryside where her husband was killed. She and translator, Xuan Ngoc Nguyen explore the meaning of war and loss on a human level. The film weaves interviews with Vietnamese and American widows into a vivid testament to the legacy of war.  Kelley Rouse will lead discussions at the conclusion of the film.

Genealogy Workshop

The workshop will include an introduction to getting started with genealogy and some hands-on practice with the library's free genealogy-related databases.  Come prepared with the names of your parents, grandparents, and if possible, great-grandparents to use while searching the online databases.  Workshop is limited to 20 participants, please register at circulation desk or by calling 410-651-0852.

Author, Tim O'Brien, will host two guest appearances in honor of our BIG READ based on his novel, The Things They Carried.  Mr. O'Brien is an award winning, nationally known author and his works are taught in high schools and universities across the country.  He is a fascinating speaker who will engage audiences of all ages!

Born on the Fourth of July is the biography of Ron Kovic. Paralyzed in the Vietnam War, Ron becomes an anti-war and human rights political activist after feeling betrayed by the country he defended.
