Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a disorder in which the nerves that control the muscles of the intestine are unusually sensitive, causing the bowels to function improperly. The result is abdominal discomfort and an altered pattern of bowel movements (either diarrhea or constipation). IBS also is called spastic colon or spastic bowel.  

 

IBS is not a disease, it is not medically serious and does not lead to other intestinal diseases such as cancer or ulcerative colitis. However, IBS may cause considerable distress and discomfort from abdominal cramping, gas, constipation, and/or diarrhea.  If diarrhea is the symptom, then dehydration can also be a risk.     

 

The cause of IBS is unknown. Symptoms may be triggered by diet, drugs, stress, or emotional factors causing stress. Triggers vary from person to person. The syndrome is about twice as common in women as men and usually begins in early adulthood.


While there is no cure for IBS, symptoms often can be controlled by stress reduction techniques and psychological counseling, since stress triggers symptoms in many people.  Changes in diet help many people control their symptoms and if none of this works, medications may be prescribed to relieve diarrhea and constipation.   International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders

Understanding that IBS is not a life-threatening disease can help reduce a child's anxiety, which may in turn lessen IBS symptoms. Certain types of counseling, including cognitive behavior therapy and hypnotherapy, have been shown to help manage IBS symptoms. Parents can help reduce a child's stress by discussing potential IBS-related issues with school personnel, for example, the need for ready access to a private restroom
