IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME, (IBS)
Spastic Colon, Spastic Bowel In Adults & Children
Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a disorder in which the nerves that control the muscles of the intestine are unusually sensitive, causing the bowels to function improperly. The result is abdominal discomfort and an altered pattern of bowel movements (either diarrhea or constipation). IBS also is called spastic colon or spastic bowel.
IBS is not a disease, it is not medically serious and does not lead to other intestinal diseases such as cancer or ulcerative colitis. However, IBS may cause considerable distress and discomfort from abdominal cramping, gas, constipation, and/or diarrhea. If diarrhea is the symptom, then dehydration can also be a risk.
The cause of IBS is unknown. Symptoms may be triggered by diet, drugs, stress, or emotional factors causing stress. Triggers vary from person to person. The syndrome is about twice as common in women as men and usually begins in early adulthood.
While there is no cure for IBS, symptoms often can be controlled by stress reduction techniques and psychological counseling, since stress triggers symptoms in many people. Changes in diet help many people control their symptoms and if none of this works, medications may be prescribed to relieve diarrhea and constipation. IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME
IN CHILDREN
Understanding that IBS is not a life-threatening disease can help reduce a child's anxiety, which may in turn lessen IBS symptoms. Certain types of counseling, including cognitive behavior therapy and hypnotherapy, have been shown to help manage IBS symptoms. Parents can help reduce a child's stress by discussing potential IBS-related issues with school personnel, for example, the need for ready access to a private restroom.

HOLISTIC APPROACH
In working with clients with IBS, I find that a holistic approach is the most effective when it includes:
Dietary changes and pro-biotics (I like Bio-K and Kieffer) to support a healthier gut
Exercise and yoga to address move the body and stretch muscles and tendons
Meditation, guided visualization and diaphragmatic breathing to calm down an over active mind, and nervous system, lower heart rate and blood pressure
Time management for work and play to create more balance in your daily life
Communication skills for more harmonious, peaceful and happy relationships
Somatic dialogue, Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and
Inner child healing work to transform subconscious aspects which might be triggering a stress response in the body.

Floating At Topanga Retreat When clients come to the Topanga Retreat for holistic stress reduction, they also get to experience a unique healing amenity, called the Floating Bed.
The Floating Bed is a teepee-shaped structure that hangs from a large oak tree on my hillside property. Enclosed by mosquito netting, white canvass cover, memory foam mattress pad and cushy pillows, the Floating Bed provides an ideal setting to decompress, de-stress, relax and even slumber after a a holistic stress reduction session. Especially when our session has included accessing deep levels of the subconscious through somatic dialogue and inner child healing work, I like to send my clients out to the Floating Bed to journal, relax and further integrate our work together before getting in their car and driving off for the rest of their day.
As soon as people get into the Floating Bed they immediately feel a sense of inner calm, peace, relaxation and safety, like being rocked and cradled in your mother's arms. Clients are invited to relax, rejuvenate and float while safely enjoying all the sounds, smells, sights and fresh air of nature. The Floating Bed is an excellent tool for Sensory Integration Therapy (SIT), Vestibular Motion Therapy (VMT), and is very effective for children of Autism, ADD and ADHD.
