The countertops are engineered stone, and the floor is luxury vinyl squares. The pendant light over the sink adds a playful color while maintaining an historic feel. The accent wall in a rich raspberry tone deftly defines a comfortable nook.

When Less Is More

Going from white to right

White space is a good thing when it highlights something that needs to stand out, but too much white makes accenting character or a focal point in a room almost impossible. The kitchen pictured to the right originally had white cabinets, white countertop, white appliances and even a white stained floor. Besides the obvious, it was nonfunctional in so many was and did not complement the look of the rest of the home. With active children and lifestyle, this family loved the idea of gathering in the kitchen to entertain and enjoy each other's company.

The new design still utilized the classic look of white cabinets, but a "character white" finish with a highlight and the addition of sage green cabinets added contrast. A focal point was created at the cooktop area using a playful tile design, and a striking cork floor design added to the vibrancy of the new space.

A fun and different element was the addition of a sliding door with exposed hardware leading into the kitchen (pictured on reverse in Should I Stay or Should I Go?). With improved lighting, and a newly designed island meant to accommodate the entertaining side of this family, this kitchen looks as if it was always meant to be here. Warm, inviting, and classic, with a touch of charm and flair.

The Challenges of This Project
* Under "whiteness" lurked darkness.
* The large beam held up floor above.
* Exterior walls did not have a single full-length stud.
* Circuits and wires patched together in haphazard practice.
* Two-story chimney buried in walls.
To give the range area more appeal, we installed custom glass tile along the backsplash
and built a custom hood made of expansive wood.

Dog Days
Are Not Over

The Dog Days of Summer refers to the weeks between July 3 and August 11. They are named after the Dog Star (Sirius) in the constellation of Canis Major. Pictured above and below are two examples of custom cabinets created to accommodate
the comfort of canines.

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

When asked if they'd prefer to remodel or move, most people would rather stay in their current home. According to a Remodeling and Builders Magazines survey, Baby Boomers and Seniors still think that existing homes are more affordable. The other factors contributing to this choice are the preference of living in an established community, ability to remodel to their owns tastes and the belief that older homes having more character. In this same survey when asked, "Is it a good time to Remodel?" the answer was usually "Yes." Forty to 60 percent of those respondents had incomes from $75,000 -$150,000.  Existing home values also played into it with those values starting at $150,000 - $500,000.
