   Square Deal Remodel

   8603 SE Stark St.

   Portland, OR 97216

The countertops are engineered stone, and the floor is luxury vinyl squares. The pendant light over the sink adds a playful color while maintaining an historic feel. The accent wall in a rich raspberry tone deftly defines a comfortable nook.

Revisionist History

What can you do with an older kitchen in the Irvington Historic District? If you think you can do anything you want, think again. The City of Portland's recent designation of Irvington as an Historic District and the resulting impact on properties that can be directly or remotely associated as historic may challenge your creative will. In one of our recent projects, we managed to accommodate the client's desired improvements, comply with the city's historic preservation code, and respect the wider neighborhood will.

Though properties are allowed unlimited alteration to interior spaces, the possibilities are severely limited due to the restrictions on exterior changes.  In this project, windows and doors were left in original historic placement and substance. A relatively insignificant side-of-the house entrance was preserved at the exterior by leaving it fully intact but inoperative; on the exterior, it was left to appear as a door, but on the interior, it was completey hidden behind a full-height pantry cabinet. Design changes to meet historic property designations were optimized yet our client's needs were met.

Beyond the historic value at the exterior, the interior space was completely upgraded to current code and design standards yet enhanced by modern appliances, products, ambiance, and a delightful color scheme chosen by the owner -- all done in tasteful, emphatic colors and historic nuance.

Inside and out, the integrity of the house's historic flare was preserved, as was the client's remodeling vision.

"I remember thinking how often we look, but never see...we listen, but never hear...we exist, but never feel. We take our relationships for granted. A house is only a place. It has no life of its own. It needs human voices, activity and laughter to come alive."

Square Deal Tops Angie's List

In 2011, Angie's List honored Square Deal with the Angie's List Super Service Award (Kitchen/Bath Category). "Only a fraction of the businesses rated on Angie's List  can claim the sterling service record of being a Super Service Award winner because we set a high bar," said Angie's List  Founder Angie Hicks.

Angie's List Super Service winners have met strict eligibility requirements including earning a minimum number of reports, an exemplary rating from their clients and abiding by Angie's List operational guidelines.

"Forgot to say that yesterday when we returned from a long walk we passed a couple in front of our house. When they saw us turn into the driveway, they came back and called to us. Said they saw the Square Deal sign and they wanted us to know that you guys did their kitchen 10 years ago and we didn't have anything to worry about because you do fantastic work on schedule! So we told them about our kitchen and that we wouldn't do anything without you. We should have asked their names, but we were all so busy congratulating each other on doing business with Square Deal that we forgot to introduce ourselves."   -

Yolo Colorhouse Spring Palette Picks

Billing itself as the "Environmentally Responsible Paint Company," Portland-based Yolo Colorhouse (www.yolocolorhouse.com) was founded in 2005 by two women
, Virginia Young and Janie Lowe (pictured below) seeking more inventive, inspiring colors that were also kinder to the earth. (In case you've ever wondered, the name Yolo comes from the first two letters of each of their last names "Yo" and "Lo.")

This spring, Yolo revealed its picks
for the 2012 Spring Palette, listed above with the
ir respective colors: Aspire, a toasty yellow reminiscent of Tuscan afternoons; Imagine, a unique off-white that is at once tame and bold, Dream, a soothing blue-green shade that is playful and daring; and Thrive, a green shade that will bring a vertiginous feeling of life to your home. These colors complement each other well and, even in the darkest days of winter, will be a welcome reminder that the cold, rainy days are soon coming to an end.
