Previously two rooms, we joined a kitchen and dining room to create one larger room with a great room feel.

How to Make
a Great Room

As part of a three room remodeling project, the kitchen featured above was given a much needed makeover.  Our clients wanted a great room feel and were interested in improving traffic flow in order to cater to a multiple-cook family.  The final design focused on removing a wall between the existing kitchen and dining room allowing space for a multipurpose island with bar stools, and a comfy and inviting custom made window seat.  This expansion also created a formal dining room from the previously unused formal living room.

Since our clients' plan is to stay in this home for a long time, some universal (aging-in-place) design was considered.  Opting for a Traditional style with all the modern conveniences, this kitchen sports a Colonial American look, striving for a symmetrical, clean sensibility and timeless feel.  To unify this room with the rest of this well-loved home, new hardwood flooring was installed throughout.

Pictured to the right is one of the two bathrooms remodeled.  The same classic look mirrors that of the rest of the home.

Cork Floors Won't
Make You Whine

If you find yourself overwhelmed by flooring choices, give cork a second look. Since it conducts heat, cork reduces your energy bill and is naturally resistant to moisture, stains, scratches, sound, insects and allergens. Its non-slippery surface makes it safer, and with more give, it's easier to walk on, softer on joints and actually better for your posture, all of which reduce fatigue.

Though cork brings to mind a mottled aesthetic, cork is available in an ever-expanding variety of options, able to mimic stone, leather, ceramic and metal and offered in a wide range of colors. It's not limited to flooring, either, being seen increasingly on countertops and bar tops.

The environmental benefits of cork remain one of its standout features, though, particularly since the trees from which cork are harvested are not killed or injured during the process. Cork has also earned the Forest Stewardship Council certification for forest management.
