Additions Can Greatly Expand Your Possibilities
Bridging the gap between this traditional home and its detached garage was the goal of a recent client, whose house is pictured here, when they came to us with a dream of a new kitchen-family room addition and covered outdoor patio space. Once the perimeter footprint was integrated between the two existing structures and roof line in place, a tall vaulted ceiling was created in the family room. This roof span also allowed for additional bonus space that the homeowners were pleased to turn into an upstairs office with the new kitchen directly below. The new office space is easily accessible from the homes original second story den. An outdoor living/entertaining space was the delightful result of the increased roof span. The soffit of the partial patio covering is finished in clear T & G cedar.
With the patio roof in place it was important to allow more natural light into the space than the new 10-foot patio doors and windows could achieve. Strategically placed skylights were installed to provide light for the family room and a custom arch window at the front of the home placed above the new kitchen sink allowed light to pour in. Topping it off were additional smaller skylights placed closer to the roof ridge that added more natural light into the new office space. One concern of the homeowner was losing natural light to the stairwell leading to the second level provided by an existing second story window scheduled to be removed as part of the renovation. To ease their concern, we installed a decorative transom light using a beveled window panel from the homes original kitchen-dining room. This allowed light to bathe a dark stairwell that would have been closed off due to the vaulted ceiling. When it came to the kitchen it was important to keep in mind the style of the home and the many antiques the clients had collected over the years. Rich cherry cabinets with traditional detailing, dark blue walls, Imperial Azul granite counters and hand scraped dark oak floors were installed. A large custom island was designed with a soft curve that echoed the soft curves of the patio, kitchen sink and arched window. | | Addition remodel - interior (before). |
