Senate Bill 512 Stalled.... |
|
Legislative leaders issue statement indicating Pension Reform legislation is on hold until fall

CTPF members scored a small victory in the battle against Senate Bill 512, which would change pension benefits going forward for current employees. It appears that the bill and its amendment will not be put for a vote during this legislative session. Find a summary of the amendment to SB512 here. Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan and Illinois House Republican Leader Tom Cross issued a joint statement indicating that they will not call the bill this legislative session. Instead, they plan to work over the summer to develop support for a pension reform bill. CTPF opposed the most recent version of the bill which shifted additional cost to employees while failing to guarantee that employers would contribute to the pension system. Your phone calls are making a difference. Legislators reportedly received a record number of calls from constituents during the past few weeks. The flood of calls has undoubtedly helped to slow down the pension "reform" legislation. |

CTPF Benefits Available to Parties to Civil Unions
Effective June 1, 2011, all pension benefits previously made available to a married person and his or her spouse, are now benefits available to the parties to a civil union. Parties to a civil union may be same- or opposite-sex couples. CTPF has offered health insurance to domestic partners and their dependents for many years, but the changes to Illinois law will entitle parties to a registered civil union to all the benefits of married couples. These benefits include surviving spouse pensions and the right to continue health insurance following the death of a qualified member. Publications will be reprinted as needed, and this change will be included in CTPF publications and information printed after June 1, 2011. Click here to read CTPF's Civil Union notice. |

Legislative Update

Click here for find additional information and a complete list of the fund's legislative priorities for 2010-2011.
Reject Senate Bill 512
CTPF encourages its members to contact their legislators and the state's legislative leadership to encourage them to reject Senate Bill 512. An amendment to the bill calls for major changes in pensions for current employees. The bill appears to be on hold until the fall veto session, but it's critical that lawmakers continue to hear from their constituents. Please consider calling, faxing, or visiting your legislators' home offices over the summer and ask your elected officials to support, not cut, pensions for Chicago's teachers.
The bill does not call for changes to pensions for current retirees.
