ISC Athletics Purpose by Bill Pearson, Superintendent

Recently the school received some questions about the goals and purposes of our athletic program and some concerns that maybe we do not give our younger students enough opportunities to develop skills and participate in competitive events. As a result, the ISC Athletic Department and School Administration decided to review and update our written purpose statements to ensure that they stress the values we want to achieve with our athletic program.

I also agree that it would be nice if we could arrange more competitions with local schools and clubs so that our teams could more experience with actual competitions. The Athletic Department has been working on this goal and making some improvements in this area. We do face one very difficult situation in that most of the local schools either have a morning or afternoon half-day sessions and may not be available or willing to play games with us at 3:30 pm when our school day finishes. However, this does not mean we give up trying.  Finally, I would like to close my comments with a sincere thank you to the parents who so respectfully wrote their letter expressing their concerns and have been very patient in waiting for our reply.  We decided that this is an important topic and the response should be shared with everyone, which is why we waited until this issue of the Bulletin.  Please take the time to read and understand the Purpose of Athletics at ISC.

Bill R. Pearson

Superintendent

ISC is excited to announce the implementation of Jupiter Grades, a web-based gradebook, this semester for grades one through 12. This new online grade reporting system will eventually provide ISC parents and students access to their current grades anytime and anywhere they have internet access. It is both Mac and Windows compatible and can be accessed from Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, or Chrome web browsers. It is also accessible on mobile devices such as iPhone, iPad, Android and others and does not require a downloaded AP. I Love to Read Month - by Paul Combs, Elementary Principal

Workshop for parents:

Date: February 9th - thursday

Time: 3:40pm

Place: ECC Multipurpose Room

February is known in many places as the "love month" so for the past few years ISC has celebrated this month as "I Love to Read Month" in an effort to promote the love of reading with our students.   We are pleased that the PTA has agreed to once again sponsor a visiting author during "I Love to Read Month." This year's visiting author, Erin Dealey, has written two children's books, Little Bo Peep Can't Get To Sleep and Goldie Locks Has Chicken Pox!

Mrs. Dealey, an American former middle and high school English teacher, will also be conducting workshops and giving presentations to all ISC students, including ECC, during her visit on February 9th and 10th.  In addition, Mrs. Dealey has agreed to present to both Parents and Teachers in the ECC MPR on Thursday, February 9th, at 3:30 p.m.. She will be giving ideas for some fun literacy games, talk about the ten things her own parents taught her about the importance of receiving an education and, if times permits, will share her path to becoming published author. We hope as many parents as possibly attend the PTA Visiting Author Parent Workshop.

The ISC administration would like to take this opportunity to thank Larissa Martins and the PTA for their support of our visiting author.  I am sure our students and ISC adults are going to enjoy their two days with Mrs. Dealey.

Elementary Community Service Project

On December 6th, 2011, Mrs. Antoinette Combs and Ms. Kim Guedes' 5th grade class visited Escola Tia Maria, a school in Santa Felicidade for adults with mental disabilities. This was the third consecutive year that the elementary school has donated hygiene products and chocolates to the 75 students who attend the school.
