AASB Conference - 2011-2012 Superintendent meeting

Sixteen school superintendents from the Association of American Schools in Brazil (AASB) recently met on September 8th and 9th in Sao Paulo for its spring meeting. These schools all from Brazil are similar in many ways. They all offer an educational program based on an American curriculum and they must be accredited by a qualifying school agency from the United States. These two factors are critical in order for schools such as the International School of Curitiba (ISC) to offer a U.S. High School Diploma to its graduates.

Advisory

The learning process should not be restricted just to the classroom. Participation in community service and environmental activities also provide valuable learning opportunities and promote the development of important values.

The Great Outdoors

What ever happen to that expression "The Great Outdoors"? For years I have been trying to figure out what happened to kids' interest in nature. I am a baby boomer child who was fortunate enough to grow up in a family of nature enthusiasts. I know that not everyone from my generation loved to go hiking, camping, and exploring nature like my family but at least many people would occasionally come along on one of our outdoor adventures. Last week I was looking for some materials in a closet in the back of my science room and I ran across a file of old materials from our nature clubs at ISC. Did you know that we used to have a high school, middle school, and even elementary nature club that would go on hikes, camp, and participate in conservation campaigns in and around Curitiba. We use to climb mountains, go tubing down rivers, explore caves, camp in the rainforest, go kayaking, and learn about nature while exploring the "Great Outdoors".

Peace Day 2011

Since 2001, International Peace Day has taken place every year on September 21st. I am pleased that our school has participated in Peace Day activities every year now since 2006. This year's Peace Day was especially eventful, highlighted by all students and staff wearing white on the day in order to display ISC's commitment to world-wide peace.

Reminder regarding the water bottles

As many of you are already aware, ISC has committed as a school to more actively promote environmental awareness, with a primary focus on educating our students of the virtues of sustainability and environmental citizenship. Our ultimate goal is that our students will develop the skills and attitudes to make informed decisions about our environment as global citizens, a keystone of our school's mission.   We believe that this linking of knowledge, inquiry and action for urban sustainability will enable our students to build for themselves a healthy future for their communities and for our wonderful planet as a whole.
