Cloud Talk

Irene Schmoller Shadow Weave Shawl

As you know by now, I really love to spin cotton!
But the funny thing is that with all my time devoted to   growing Cotton Clouds these past 35 years, I really haven't given myself the time to sit and enjoy spinning cotton as I used to.
So when Liz Gipson said she was coming to my home to film me spinning cotton, I panicked!  Did I really remember how to do it; how would I look on camera spinning cotton in my own funky way, sometimes with one foot on the couch as the other treadled.
It was a grueling day of takes and retakes following Liz's production
instructions. I wasn't really sure what sense it all made, until I saw the final cut of our  new video From Start to Finish: Spinning Cotton
In it , I show you the three basic tricks to successfully spinning cotton on your wheel, how to ply your handspun and the best way to scour your  cotton yarn.   Click Here to watch.
Whether you've been spinning for years or are brand new to it, you will love how beautifully the variety of our cotton fibers spin into a soft and luxurious yarn.  My other video will  help you choose the best cotton for you.  Click Here and learn more.
Cotton is just as easy to spin as any other fiber; it just takes some tricks and practice.  Give it a try! You just might get hooked on spinning cotton as I did over 35 years ago.
Now it's time for me to get back to my wheel!  Happy Spinning!

Spinning Wheel Tips

Cotton needs alot of twist to hold together as a yarn.  You don't want a lot of pull-in on your fiber or it will simply pull apart before getting the twist needed for  strength and durability.

  1. If you have a flyer-driven wheel with a scotch tension, loosen the drive belt so there is just enough tension for the flyer to spin.
  2. Use the smallest whorl available to maximize the amount of twist that enters the yarn per revolution of your wheel.
  3. You can also sit farther away from the wheel while drafting the fibers further back to allow more twist to enter the yarn before winding it on to the bobbin.
