Greetings,
This month we've had a lot of calls from people that have received an email from "someone they know" that contains a link to a website that turns out to be advertising a Canadian pharmacy or work-at-home opportunity. A short time later the caller's email account was hacked and is sending the same email to all of their contacts. Most likely the website used a security vulnerability to capture the email login credentials of the person viewing the website. An important rule of thumb is to NEVER CLICK ON LINKS IN AN EMAIL THAT YOU ARE NOT EXPECTING AND NOT ABSOLUTELY SURE OF WHAT WEBSITE IT WILL TAKE YOU TO. Other topics covered this month:
- Microsoft to end support for Windows XP in April 2014 - start thinking about updating
- Internet Explorer 9 being installed automatically - How to restore the missing toolbars.

Microsoft to end support for Windows XP in April 2014 - start thinking about updating
|
|
Microsoft will end support of Windows XP in April 2014, meaning that they will no longer be providing security and reliability updates as they do now on a monthly basis. In less than 2 years any computers that still have Windows XP computers will become highly vulnerable to getting viruses and malware.
If you still have a computer with Windows XP it's time to start thinking about updating to a new computer with a modern version of Windows (currently Windows 7) before April 2014. The good news is that new computer hardware these days will likely cost much less than your old computer. Middle-of-the-road computers for everyday computing average less than $500 on sale.

Internet Explorer 9 being installed automatically - How to restore the missing toolbars
|
|
Microsoft has started automatically updating their web browser to Internet Explorer version 9 (on Windows Vista and 7 only). IE9 is more secure and has a more simplistic interface - the menus, toolbars and buttons are hidden when first installed. This is a drastic change from earlier versions of Internet Explorer and you might miss the various toolbars.
To display the Command, Status, and Favorites bar, simply right-click an empty area next to a tab and check which items(s) you want displayed (see screen shot in full article).

Cheap Unlicensed Computer Repair -
"You Get What You Pay For"
Do you have a friend or neighbor who "knows" computers - perhaps someone who just started fixing computers during their spare time? Do they actively keep-up with the computer industry while fixing computers on a daily basis like we do?
Computer Techs has been in business since 2003, and our technicians have over 20 years computer experience.
Our calls for service have leveled off in the past year-or-so due to an abundance of new inexperienced and unlicensed computer repair people. Similar to hiring an unlicensed contractor to work on your home, it may be cheaper to go with someone else in the short term. However, you can count on Computer Techs to get the job done quickly and correctly, and we'll be available the next time you need service. We are often called to finish repairing what someone else didn't fix correctly.
