Greetings,
This month nearly half of our calls for help were after hackers had logged into the caller's email account and stole and/or deleted their contacts/address book, and began sending spam or requests for money to all of their contacts. Sadly none of the people affected read this monthly newsletter or saw the monthly reminders (the links to popular topics along the right column of this newsletter). Unfortunately we are unable to provide much help after-the-fact - most of the damage has been done. Please read the full article in this month's newsletter so that you won't become the next victim of email hacking. I spend several hours each month gathering information, composing and editing the content of this newsletter. I do this as a free extra service for 1400+ Computer Techs clients - to help you be informed of important news and tips related to your computer and the internet. If you know someone that would benefit from the information, please forward it to a friend via the link at the bottom of this newsletter. If we help a friend or family member that you refer to us, you will receive $20 off your next service call. See details here. If you're not happy with our service, please let me know.
All articles from our newsletters spanning over 5 years can also be accessed on our exclusive website for Computer Techs clients www.CTreno.com/tips. Also you can view up-to-date information throughout the month on our Facebook page (be sure to "like" us if you are a Facebook member so that the articles appear in your news feed).
Thank you.

Email hacking on the rise: What you need to do to stay safe

|
In the past month we've received an unusually high number of calls from clients that have had their email accounts hacked. The hackers have accessed their email password either by simply asking for it via a phishing email, or hacking into other insecure web site databases then trying to use the same password to access their email account. After accessing their email account the hackers have done many of the following...

This month's wildfires and email hacking reminds us of the importance of off-site backup
If a fire rages through your neighborhood, you may not have the time nor be around to save the irreplaceable documents, pictures or financial data stored on the hard drive inside your computer. It's also important to frequently export a copy of your contacts/address book. The easiest method I've found to backup my irreplaceable data is with Mozy, a secure online backup service which backs up my data on a daily basis.

Cheap Unlicensed Computer Repair -
"You Get What You Pay For"
Do you have a friend or neighbor who "knows" computers - perhaps someone who just started fixing computers during their spare time? Do they actively keep-up with the computer industry while fixing computers on a daily basis like we do?
Computer Techs has been in business since 2003, and our technicians have over 20 years computer experience.
Our calls for service have leveled off in the past year-or-so due to an abundance of new inexperienced and unlicensed computer repair people. Similar to hiring an unlicensed contractor to work on your home, it may be cheaper to go with someone else in the short term. However, you can count on Computer Techs to get the job done quickly and correctly, and we'll be available the next time you need service. We are often called to finish repairing what someone else didn't fix correctly.
